Fort Lauderdale loosens Sunday alcohol sales

Good news for Sunday morning drinkers in Fort Lauderdale. City commissioners there agreed to allow bars, restaurants and other establishments to begin selling alcohol at 7 a.m. on Sunday, as they do the rest of the week, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

But who needs to drink that early, anyway? Consider the graveyard shift worker, who ends the workday while most of us remain snugly asleep in our beds. There’s no after-work happy hours for those folks, but they might want to chill out with a beer or two after the whistle blows, just like the office drone on a Friday afternoon.

Sunday brunches bring big business to many local restaurants, and being able to serve champagne or mimosas attracts more customers. Not to mention sports bars, who can serve some beers to customers claiming their seats for lunch and waiting for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The existence of such blue laws dates to Puritan days, when pretty much any form of commerce was prohibited on Sundays to adhere to the strict Christian dogma of the time. Nowadays, still-existing blue laws apply mainly to alcohol sales – and sometimes other “vice” businesses, such as gambling establishments – but lawmakers in municipalities and states across the nation are striking down or loosening such ordinances.

In the case of Fort Lauderdale, those wanting to buy a six-pack or bottle of wine before noon will still be blue: The amended alcohol law does not apply to package sales.

Beer at Five Guys Burgers & Fries?

Beer in Florida, photo by Big C Harvey on FlickrJust last week, I sat eating lunch in a Five Guys Burgers & Fries restaurant in Winter Garden, thinking, “It sure would be great to have a good beer to wash this down.”

Then a few days later, I came across a report in the Orlando Business Journal about the downtown Orlando’s Church Street district. About halfway down is a little tidbit about a new Five Guys opening there:

“This will be the first Five Guys to serve beer, said spokeswoman Jeni Hatter.”

Naturally, this raises the question, what kind of beer?

I’ll be contacting the Five Guys media relations department to follow up on this.

Stay tuned.

Florida beer distributor sold to Chicago firm

Beer in florida, photo by cogdogblog on FlickrA news release from Reyes Holdings LLC confirms that Central Florida beer distributor Schenck Company has entered an agreement to be sold to Florida Distributing Co. LLC, a subsidiary of the Chicago-based food-and-beverage distributor.

Schenck started as a distributor for Miller Brewing in 1954, and its major business still lies with MillerCoors, but it also distributes a wide range of craft beers in its territory of Orange, Lake, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties

Orlando-based Schenck, the nation’s 20th largest beer distributor, employs more than 500 people. Among the craft beers it distributes are Anchor Steam, Bell’s, Boulder Beer, Dogfish Head, Brew Dog, Rogue, Samuel Adams, Stone and Terrapin, as well as products from Florida-based breweries such as Orlando Brewing and Dunedin Brewing.

A spokeswoman for Reyes Holding told the Orlando Business Journal that all Schenck employees will be retained.

“From six employees distributing Miller Brewing Company products in 1954 to the 500 strong team we have today I am proud of Schenck Company’s history, and feel privileged to have worked with so many great people,” said Schenck CEO Jay G. M. Schenck in the news release. “Joining Reyes Holdings is an outstanding opportunity to continue the superb service and traditions Schenck is known for.”

The transaction is expected to close in April.
