Reports: Cigar City Will Can Some of Its Beers

Cigar City Brewing photo by Gerard WalenThe Cigar City Brewing Facebook page has some interesting posts on it this morning.

From Cigar City: “Did you know? Cans are impenetrable to light, unlike bottles.”

Previous post from a liker: “Picked up the recent copy of Southern Brewing News and it said you guys plan to install a canning line in the new facility! If it’s true I’m super happy, and formally request a seasonal canning of the Table Saison. (Doubt that’s ever been done before).”

Southern Brewing News does not make its articles available online, and I do not have a subscription, but this news has been repeated on other sites such as BeerAdvocate.com. It is not known when the canning line will be operational, but the reports say that the first beers to be canned at the Tampa craft brewery will be Jai Alai IPA and Florida Cracker white ale.

Though some craft beer geeks look down their noses at beer in cans, Beer in Florida is a big supporter. Cans allow no potentially damaging light or oxygen to enter, they are more environmentally friendly and more easily recyclable, and some beaches allow alcohol, but not glass. Not to mention that cans are lighter and easier to pack when you’re taking a road trip out of state and want to share some Florida brew goodness with your friends.

I think you misinterpreted what was reported, or my post on FB. The plan is to introduce Tocobaga in six packs year round, joining Jai Alai and Maduro Brown. They plan on doing four six pack offerings year round, but not necessarily in cans.
