Florida beer gets top props

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenSome Florida beer bars have garnered accolades lately from the national beer press. Three made Draft Magazine’s list of America’s 100 Best Beer Bars: 2011, and a whopping five were named to RateBeer’s 50 Best Beer Bars 2011.

Here they are. Click on the links for more information.

Draft Magazine

RateBeer (list was numbered)

  • Redlight Redlight (#3)
  • Oldsmar Tap House (#26)
  • The Cock & Bull Pub (#27), 975 Cattlemen Road, Sarasota.
  • Proof (#31), 1717 W. Tennessee, Tallahassee.
  • Abbey (#48), 117 N. Woodland Blvd., Deland.

In addition, RateBeer named Cigar City Brewing the fourth best brewer in the WORLD! And several of CCB’s beer made the Best Beers by Style list.

Is this the tipping point, where the rest of the country no longer considers Florida a “craft beer wasteland”? I think it’s time.

On the other hand, the Houston Press recently published a graphic: “Why Your State Drinks: The American State of Brews,”  which pegged Florida with (gag) MGD Light 64. Hey, Texas! Try again.

We are here, we are beer.

Jacksonville beer scene poised for growth

beer in florida, photo by djprybyl on FlickrFlorida Times-Union writer Roger Bull recently wrote that the craft beer scene in Jacksonville will get a boost with the planned opening of two brewpubs and a craft brewery.

The latest to announce plans is Green Room Brewing, which will be at 228 Third Street N. in Jacksonville Beach. Bull writes that Green Room owners Eric Luman  and Mark Stillman have made it over preliminary regulatory hurdles and now need planning commission approval and state and federal permits.

A little closer to opening days are the Engine 15 Brewing Co., also in Jacksonville Beach, and Brewers Pizza on Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park. Both have their brewing systems installed and are waiting for final permits. Both currently offer nice selections of craft beer on tap and in bottle.

The new establishments will join other Jacksonville beer spots such as small brewers Bold City Brewery, Intuition Ale Works, and the River City Brewing Co. as well as the massive Budweiser brewery.

Cigar City Brewing seeks label artists

You can have your label design next to these

Fancy yourself an artist who always wanted your work on a beer bottle? Well, if you live in the Tampa Bay area, here’s your chance.

Cigar City Brewing and Hampton Arts Management are inviting artists to submit designs for the Tampa brewery’s 2011 release of Tocobaga Red Ale. The top 10 entries will be exhibited at the craft brewery’s tasting room from June 3 to July 10, 2011, and guest judge Todd Smith, Tampa Museum of Art director, will choose the winner.

If that’s not enough to awaken your muse, consider this:  The winning artist will receive $500 and a free case of Tocobaga Red.

Beer writer Sean Nordquist describes the beer:

“Tocobaga Red Ale is a deep-colored amber ale with hop flavor and aromas dominating and a subtle caramel malt sweetness to balance in the finish. Only available on draft currently, it comes in at 7.2% ABV. and is quickly becoming a favorite not only of regulars to the tasting room, but of the brewery staff as well. Tocobaga pours a slightly hazy reddish-amber color with an off-white head and great lacing. The aroma is amazing – hoppy and citrusy with tropical fruit notes like pineapple and hints of sweet caramel malt too. For a red ale, there is a surprising and delicious hop bitterness one would associate more with an IPA, almost West Coast style, but there is balance, too. The mouthfeel is excellent and very dry. I am not usually a big fan of red ales in general, but this is really, really good.”

The label design contest is open to all artists living or working in the Tampa Bay area (Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties).

Digital submissions must be in by 5 p.m. on February 25, 2011. Mailed submissions must be postmarked by February 18, 2011.

For more information and complete contest rules, go to http://www.hamptonartsmanagement.org/ccb/.
