Another Craft Brewery Opens in Tampa

Image courtesy of Cold Storage Craft BreweryIt will be a while before you can call the craft brewery scene in Tampa “crowded,” but the opening of a new brewery in the Seminole Heights neighborhood brings it a little closer.

Cold Storage Craft Brewery at 4101 N. Florida Ave. started distributing its beer in December. It already has taps in local pubs and restaurants, and bottles of its beer are showing up on the shelves of Tampa Bay area stores, as well as the tasting room at the brewery.

The brewery was founded by Andy DeLaParte, Bruce Talcott, and Brent Berthy. According to their website: “The founders of Cold Storage Craft Brewery; Andy, Brent and Bruce were born and raised in the Tampa Bay area and have focused their efforts on creating craft beer that reflect the unique environment that is Florida.”

They currently produce three styles under the “Florida Avenue” brand: Ale, IPA and Blueberry.

I haven’t been to the brewery yet or tasted its beers, but this certainly calls for a road trip to Tampa; I’ll report back to you.

Being a native of Tampa myself, I’m happy to see another craft brewer joining Cigar City Brewing and the Tampa Bay Brewing Company (which recently received permission to start selling growlers).

You can learn more at the Cold Storage Craft Brewery website. You can email them at mail@coldstoragecraftbrewery.com or call 813-374-2101.

Beer in Florida updates

Social media rocks! Here are a couple of quick updates about craft beer in Florida that I found out tonight while checking around the ol’ intertubes.

  • Image courtesy of Victory BeerBright House Networks Field in Clearwater will be serving some Victory Beer offering during Philadelphia Phillies spring training games. Coincidentally, I was drinking a HopDevil when I saw this. An outstanding beer. Check out the details on the Victory Beer Blog.
  • A new craft beer bar in Vero Beach looks quite promising. According to its website, BrewGrrs Burgers & Brews has “36 draft lines and a diverse selection of specialty bottled craft brews from the USA and abroad.” Sounds like its worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Mark your calendars for Florida beer events in February

Shipyard Brewing Winter Park photo by Gerard WalenThe final weekend of January wielded some heavy-hitting craft beer events throughout Florida, and February will bring a lot more.

  • Down south, hundreds of craft beer lovers descended on Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday for samples at the Jupiter Craft Beer Festival. The night before, a lucky 300 were able to partake in a variety of beer-food pairings at the Field of Dreams event.
  • Also on Saturday, Mr. Beery’s in Sarasota held its first “Total Tap Takeover” of the year, when the craft beer pub’s 25 taps each flowed with a different brew from Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing.
  • In Winter Park, I covered the Friday night grand opening of the Shipyard Emporium brew pub and market. Opening night, unfortunately, was overcrowded and not planned well. Those attending endured 30- to 45-minute waits to order a beer, and the creations from brewer Ron Raike tapped quickly. The establishment has promise, though, and I will return to give it a fair evaluation. (Here are some pictures from the grand opening).

Here’s what to look forward to in February:

  • Friday to Sunday, February 11-13: Coasters Pub in Melbourne will hold its second annual Belgian Beer Fest through the weekend. Organizers expect to offer about 50 different Belgians over the course of three days, with 35 kegs tapped at any one time. If you’re a fan of Belgian beer … well, just check out the list.
  • Saturday, February 12: The annual Bands, Brew & BBQ festival kicks off at SeaWorld Orlando. Organizers have put together a pretty impressive craft beer list. Busch Gardens is holding a similar event in Tampa, and though the beer list is shorter, there will be an all-you-can-taste option.
  • Friday to Sunday, February 18-20: Bon Beer Voyage, a Florida-based beer tour company, will hold its second annual Tampa Beer Safari Weekend. The package includes visits and tastings at Cigar City, Saint Somewhere and Dunedin breweries, a visit to Tarpon Springs, transportation to breweries and tour sites, two breakfasts, a beer-paired lunch and two gourmet beer-paired dinners to be hosted at Bernini’s in Ybor City and Fleming’s Steak House. The best kind of road trip: Someone else does the driving!
  • Image courtesy of Celebrate SarasotaSaturday, February 26: Celebrate Sarasota at Phillippi Estate Park promises (taking a deep breath) more than 100 beer samples, tastes of more than 50 chili and wing competitor recipes, live music from six local bands, cornhole tournaments, a bike show, a mechanical shark ride, sumo wrestling and more than 50 other vendors. (pshew!) And my friend Jennifer Borresen designed the poster! She does great work. Check it out here.
  • Saturday, February 26: The Stogies & Stout party at Dunedin Brewery offers two of my favorite things. This 11th annual celebration of good beer and good smokes attracts a sell-out crowd every year, and blues legend Eddie Kirkland will perform.

Also, I just found out that New Leaf Market  in Tallahassee holds a craft beer tasting every Saturday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Its website boasts that the store has a 16-foot-long beer cooler, so it sounds like it would be worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Cigar City Brewing photo by Gerard WalenAnd before the month is out, be sure to mark your calendar for the annual release of Hunahpu Mayan Chocolate Imperial Stout at Cigar City in Tampa on March 12. This beer has gained a cult following across the country, and hundreds of people will travel to the Cigar City Tasting Room to get a chance to buy some bottles. Reports from those who have tasted this year’s version say it’s the best yet. Expect a big party and lots of beer-loving folks.

Also coming up in March is the annual Florida Brewers Guild Beerfest on March 5 in Tampa’s Ybor City. This festival brings brewers – and their beer – from across the state, where craft beer fans can mingle with them and taste their creations.

If I missed anything, please add it in the comments section or enter it into our interactive events calendar. If you would like to give me a heads up on any craft beer event coming up in Florida, shoot me an email at trips4beer@gmail.com.

Cheers!

Beer’s a Big Part of SeaWorld Orlando Festival

Image courtesy of SeaWorld OrlandoI’ve noticed that as the craft beer scene grows in Florida, it slowly seeps into places that you might not expect. Case in point: Theme parks.

Though you’ll still find mostly macro-brew offerings at the drink stands in the parks, the restaurants, clubs and other such venues are starting to put more local and microbrew beer taps and bottles on their menus. The variety and quality of beer at the annual Epcot Food & Wine Festival increases each year.

My friends at the website Party Through The Parks do an excellent job of cataloging these offerings – as well as spirits, wine and food.

The latest hope that you might be able to visit a theme park and drink a beer that isn’t one degree away from water comes from SeaWorld Orlando. The home of Shamu – along with Tampa’s Busch Gardens – is ready to kick off its annual Band, Brew & BBQ festival and concert series, and they promise “nearly 60 craft beers from 21 different domestic and international breweries” at its new beer garden.

Here’s the list they sent me:

  • Widmer Brothers Brewing Company: Hefeweizen, Deadlift IPA, Drifter Pale Ale, Drop Top Amber Ale.
  • Kona Brewing Company: Longboard Lager, Fire Rock Pale Ale, Pipeline Porter.
  • Southern Tier Brewing Company: Gemini, Unearthly IPA, 422 Pale Wheat Ale, Phin & Matt’s Extraordinary Ale, IPA.
  • Florida Beer Company: Swamp Ape, Key West Sunset Ale, Key West Southernmost Wheat, Hurricane Reef Caribbean Pilsner.
  • Victory Brewing Company: Prima Pils, Hop Devil, Golden Monkey, V-12.
  • Blue Point Brewing Company: Toasted Lager, Blueberry Ale, Rastafa Rye Pale Ale, Hoptical Illusion IPA.
  • Magic Hat Brewing Company: #9, Howl, Circus Boy.
  • Starr Hill Brewery: The Love, Dark Starr Stout, Northern Lights IPA, Jomo.
  • Redhook Ale Brewery: ESB, Longhammer IPA, Mudslinger, Blonde.
  • Effinheimer Beer: Ale, IPA.
  • Woodchuck Cider: Amber, Pear, Granny, Limited Release.
  • Gordon Biersch Brewery: Blonde Bock, Marzen, Maibock, Polar, Famosa, Tona.
  • S.A. Damm: Estrella Damm, Inedit, Daura.
  • Others: Leffe, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Bass, Beck’s.

No matter what your taste in beer is, you’re sure to find something in that list to satisfy your palate. If you can’t decide, 12-beer variety samplers will be available. That’s a pretty amazing size for a sampler; most places offer no more than six different beers in their flights.

Though some – OK, many – of my favorite craft brewers are missing from the list (Rogue, Dogfish Head, Cigar City … and on and on), I’m encouraged to see the offerings from Effinheimer Beer. They brew at a small operation in the Central Florida town of Minneola, about 10 minutes from my house, and produce some really tasty stuff. Kudos to SeaWorld for including some locally produced beer.

The event does look like it will be a rollicking good time!

Here’s the press release SeaWorld sent out about Bands, Beer & BBQ:

ORLANDO – Central Florida’s can’t-miss BBQ festival and concert series kicks off its four-weekend run on Saturday, February 12, at SeaWorld Orlando.  The park’s Bands, Brew & BBQ is back and bigger than ever with more BBQ variety, more brews and the best in country and classic rock.

Bands, Brew & BBQ is included with park admission.  The hot event also takes place at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay on Sundays with even more country and classic rock stars.

NEW – SeaWorld partners with Central Florida’s favorite BBQ restaurants to bring an even richer variety of great food.  Local BBQ biggies – Four Rivers Smokehouse (Orlando Sentinel reader’s top choice for best BBQ in Orlando), Texas Cattle Co. and Smokey Bones – will be cooking on-site and SeaWorld’s own team of chefs round out the menus with home-style beef jerky, kettle chips, buffalo chili and much more.  VIP tickets are available and include BBQ and reserved seating for the day’s concert.

NEW –  Wash down that tasty BBQ with an ice-cold brew at the all-new Beer Garden featuring nearly 60 craft beers from 21 different domestic and international breweries.  Ale, stouts, porters, lagers – can’t decide on one?  Try a 12-variety brew sampler.

Bands, Brew & BBQ also has top headliners in classic rock and country in afternoon concerts at Bayside Stadium.  This year’s lineup includes:
