Beer Bites: News and Updates from Florida’s Craft Beer Scene

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I’ll be taking a road trip for beer Saturday on Florida’s West Coast, starting at the Celebrate Sarasota festival in the afternoon, where I’ll have to limit my intake of beer because I’ll be next heading up to the Dunedin Brewery for its Stogies and Stout event in the evening. I’ve booked a motel room within walking distance of the brewery, so no limitation of beer consumption will be necessary (other than, you know, still being able to walk). Both events look pretty awesome. Celebrate Sarasota promises samples of more than 100 beers, tastings from the competitors in both chili and wing competitions, live music and lots more. I’m especially excited for the Stogies and Stout event because: A) I love a good cigar and a good stout; and B) This will be my first visit to the Dunedin Brewery.

I Want to Ride My Bicycle

Speaking of road trips, Shipyard Emporium Winter Park will be the host for Saturday’s Beer Bomb Bike Tour to New Smyrna Beach. A group of 24 beer-and-biking enthusiasts and their bicycles will jump on The Shipyard Bus for a trip to the east coast, where they will check into a motel and then pedal their way around the town on a tour of bars and restaurants, with a featured craft beer at each stop. They’ll return Sunday after lunch. Sounds like a blast!

Mmm, Lobster …

Speaking of Shipyard Emporium (the segues keep coming!), the Winter Park brewpub got some nice press this morning by Kelly Fitzpatrick of the Orlando Sentinel. She gave high props to the Emporium’s “Live Maine Mondays,” where customers can get “a whole Maine lobster, new potatoes and corn for $18.95 and pints of Shipyard brew for $3 a pop.” I attended the brewpub’s chaotic grand opening last month, but haven’t had a chance to go back. Sounds like I’ll have to schedule my return for a Monday night. You can check out some pictures I took at the grand opening night right here.

Mmm. Girl Scout Cookies …

Speaking of pictures, picture this (Ouch! Apparently the segue well has run dry): Girl Scout Cookies and craft beer, two great tastes that taste great … together? Find out Tuesday from 8 to 11 p.m. at Mr. Beery’s Sarasota, when the bar will host a pairing of four craft beers paired specifically with four different Girl Scout Cookies.  It is not known if any squads of the diminutive dealers of drug-like delicacies darling little Scouts will be in attendance, but there are plenty of options out there for scoring your Thin Mint fix. If you don’t live in the Sarasota area, it certainly sounds worthy of a road trip. And now that we’ve come full circle …

That’s it for Beer Bites this week. Feel free to email trips4beer@gmail.com with any ideas or story tips, and please use our interactive calendar to get the word out about any upcoming craft beer events.

Until next time, Florida, remember: We are here! We are Beer!

Buckbean Brewing’s coming to Florida is in the can

Photo courtesy of BuckBean BrewingBuckbean Brewing Company announced today that it will start selling its craft beer in Florida.

The Reno, Nevada, craft brewery is one of the few in the country that exclusively cans its product.

Doug Booth, Buckbean owner and president, said that all three of the brewery’s year-round beers will be shipped to Florida, and he expects them to arrive in about 30 days, depending on the distributor’s timetable. Those beers are: Original Orange Blossom Ale, Tule Duck Red Ale, and Black Noddy Lager (which won a bronze medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival). The beer will be available in kegs and four-packs of 16 oz. cans, Booth said.

“We’ve been wanting to go to Florida for a while because of Orange Blossom Ales,” Booth said, referring to the fact that the orange blossom is the official flower of the Sunshine State.

Booth said Buckbean currently distributes in Nevada, California, Tennessee and the Maryland-D.C. area, and will be going to Arizona soon. Orlando-based Micro Beverages will be the Florida distributor.

The move into Florida will likely cover the area from Tallahassee down to Southwest Florida, and across to Jacksonville on the east coast, and possibly down to the Palm Beach area, though Booth said he’s hasn’t seen Micro Beverage’s final distribution maps.

Buckbean does not plan to create any jobs in Florida right away, letting the distributor handle the initial introduction of its brews.

“I will be the one to come out there, to help them out,” Booth said. “Our goal is to eventually hire a rep to cover the area that is out there.”

Booth thinks canned craft beer will be a great fit for Florida’s beaching and boating community.

“It takes less space, cools off faster, and there’s no breakage,” he said.

Buckbean also sponsors the annual CanFest in Reno that features canned craft beers from various breweries across the country. The 2010 festival was named one of the Top 10 Fall Beer Festivals by Road Trips for Beer.

Beer at SeaWorld Orlando: You Might Be Impressed

beer in florida photo by Gerard WalenOther than at a few special events, such as the annual Epcot Food and Wine Festival, craft beer and Florida theme parks generally have little to do with each other. But SeaWorld Orlando has successfully forged a partnership between the two that offers a chance for beer geeks and theme park fans to enjoy a day together in sunny Central Florida.

If you’re there for the beer, as I was on the Saturday I went, Bands, Brew & BBQ unfolds sort of like a Russian nesting doll.  Enter the park, and bear right till you get to the path that leads to Atlantis Bayside Stadium. Go down the path, and you’ll enter the festival grounds, with a small stage, the barbecue and other food vendors, and carnival games. Keep going and you’ll get to the entrance of the beer garden, on the right.

Each brew has an information sheet with the beer name, beer style, brewery, and the numbers for alcohol content and/or International Bitterness Units. Because the beers are broken up among the booths, waits are never more than a few minutes. Stand-up tables and park benches offer places to stop and chat with other beer lovers.

Although you’ll find some of the widely available imports, such as Bass, Beck’s and Stella Artois, the garden primarily features craft beer from such breweries as Starr Hill, Florida Beer, Victory and Blue Point. Most are on tap but some, such as Victory’s V-12 Belgian-style ale (12 percent alcohol by volume!), are poured from the bottle.

Because most of these beers are meant to be sipped and savored, it will likely take you a few hours to get through all 12.

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenThe concerts take place at 4:30, just steps away from the beer garden in Bayside Stadium. Willie Nelson performed on the day I attended, and put on a great show. If you care more about the music – or the beer – than seeing the performance, you can still hear it as you sample because the music is piped throughout the festival area.

Two of the beers being poured are Effinheimer Ale and Effinheimer IPA, produced at Lagniappe Brewing Company in Minneola, which is just a few minutes away from my house. I was chatting with Brad Banker, founder and head brewer, the other day and he mentioned that it might be a smart thing for SeaWorld to keep the beer garden open all the time. Of course, I agree, but if that doesn’t happen, it would be great if SeaWorld could offer some of the craft beer options year-round at other venues throughout the park.

If your tastes run toward the blandness of mass-produced domestic lager, don’t worry: Plenty of AB-InBev products are available near the Festival Stage and throughout the park.

TIPS

  • Beer in florida photo by Gerard WalenBands, Brew & BBQ takes up a relatively small part of the park, and the rest of SeaWorld is business as usual. If you want to hit the coasters, rides and shows, get there when the park opens, then head to the festival area in the early afternoon. You might want to grab your barbecue plate first; those lines tend to get longer as the day goes on.
  • Shows start promptly at 4:30 p.m. If you want a good seat, get there an hour early. If you want a seat, get there at 4. If you show up at 4:30, you won’t get a seat at all.
  • Bring the kids. Though you need to be 21 to drink beer, there are plenty of family activities going on in the festival area, including carnival games, dance contests and lessons, and character appearances. Your young ’uns might even get to dance with Shamu!
  • Though there are shaded areas in the beer garden, you won’t escape the sun. Be sure to use plenty of sunscreen.
  • Prepare for a long wait in traffic after the park closes. That’s just the way it is.

Beer In Florida updates: Space Beer, Blood for Beer, Beer Olympics and more

A quick roundup of news from the Florida craft beer scene.

BEEEERRR IIIIINNNN SPAAAAACE!!!

photo by jurvetson on FlickrAn Australian brewery reportedly will debut its new beer Saturday, February 26, in Florida. But what makes this different from Fosters? It’s designed to be consumed in space. And no, there will be no daily happy hours at the International Space Station. The brewery, 4 Pines Brewing Company, designed the beer for passengers on commercial space tourist flights. And, by the way 4 Pines, I’m still waiting for my invitation to the tasting.

Blood for Beer

An errant tweet this week from the @RedCross Twitter account turned into a publicity bonanza for the group and Delaware’s Dogfish Head Brewery, leading to a flood of #gettngslizzerd hashtags on Twitter and a slew of monetary and blood donations to the American Red Cross. In a few weeks, you can join the spirit of the movement AND get a free pint of beer at Orlando Brewing’s Pint for a Pint Blood Drive.  Florida’s Blood Centers will have a donation bus parked at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando on Sunday, March 6. Anyone donating a pint of blood there that day will get a coupon for a pint of beer at Orlando Brewing, Florida’s only certified organic brewery, and a chance to name a new beer.

Grand Openings

  • World of Beer continues its world-domination expansion strategy with the opening of a new store in Land O’ Lakes. This is the chain’s 12th location in Florida. With more than 500 beers in bottles and on tap at each of its franchises, World of Beer admits that it is “anticipating national expansion at rapid speed.”
  • Another Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar has landed in Lakeland. Though the focus of these casual eateries is on wings and buckets of mass-produced domestic lagers, there are enough craft and import brews on tap that beer geeks can usually find something to suit their palates. I really like the wings, too (not the “boneless,” though), and huge video screens and multiple TVs make BWW a great place to watch the game.
  • According to Jacksonville.com,  the Bold City Grill is now serving customers at the Sheraton Jacksonville. The restaurant features the beer of hometown craft brewer Bold City Brewery, as well as what looks like some mouth-watering menu items.

On The Road

  • Coming up on March 14 is the Beer Bomb Bus Tour: Lake and Whiskey Edition. The tour starts with a beer class at The Shipyard Emporium, then  makes the rounds to a local whiskey distillery and two craft beer bars, where further educational sessions – and tastings – will be conducted. Details are here.
  • Finally, our friends at Orlando Pub Crawl are holding the 2011 Orlando Winter Beerlympics on Saturday at Wall Street Plaza. Events include Flip Cup, Quarters and Beer Pong. Unfortunately for craft beer geeks, the featured brew of this extraordinary event is ordinary Miller Lite. The good news is that it’s bottomless drafts.

If you have any beer news or tips that you think might be a good fit for Beer in Florida, please email the info to trips4beer@gmail.com. Florida craft beer venues and groups are always welcome to add upcoming events to our interactive calendar.

And remember, Florida: We are Here. We are Beer.
