Celebrate Sarasota Festival offers plenty for everyone

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenThe Celebrate Sarasota beer festival had lots of beer, but so much more was going on that even teetotalers found plenty to do and see. And the money it raised went to a good cause.

Chili and wings were on the menu, as teams of cooks handed out samples of their creations, hoping to be named the winner of each category. A bike show allowed riders to show off their wheels, and a cornhole tournament had folks line up to toss their beanbags. That’s not mentioning the mechanical shark, live local bands, food and drink vendors, or local entrepreneurs showcasing their businesses.

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenThe beer selection leaned toward macrobrews and widely available imports, but there were a few craft gems available: Victory, Southern Tier and Blue Point among them. I was happy to see some samples from new breweries in the Florida craft beer scene. Jalehouse Beer, based in Sarasota but currently contract-brewed by Florida Beer Co. in Melbourne, had its Jalehouse Light and Jalehouse Lock Down Lager available in bottles. (Jalehouse was named the Best Beer of the festival).

Also being served from bottles were the three Florida Avenue beers from Tampa’s Cold Storage Craft Brewery: IPA, Ale and Blueberry.

The Beks Group organized the festival to benefit the Sarasota and Manatee Kiwanis Clubs.

“It’s a good turnout,” said Tim Bekkering of The Beks Group, a Sarasota-based organization that sponsors fundraising festivals and events. “You couldn’t ask for better weather, people are happy, and the parking lot is full.”

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenIn fact, I was a bit worried when I saw the parking lot rapidly filling when I arrived about 20 minutes after the start of the festival. I envisioned long lines and having to fight crowds, but my fears proved wrong when I stepped onto the festival grounds. The booths and events were spread out on the grounds of Sarasota’s 60-acre Phillippi Estate Park, with plenty of room to spare. That helped handle the crowd, no doubt attracted in some part by partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 70s.

Bekkering said in a follow-up email that the money raised has not yet been calculated, but “thousands attended, thousands of beers were drank and thousand of dollars were raised for Kiwanis.”

He added that the event will happen again next year, though maybe at a larger venue.

Beer in Florida … I Mean Space

Space beer is tested and tastedI just received the press release regarding the recent test of beer brewed to be consumed in space. The brewer said they are trying to get the beer into the U.S., possibly by mid-April, so us earthbound misfits can give it a try.

Here’s the release:

Orlando, Florida – Astronauts4Hire has completed its inaugural paid contract to test the world’s first beer designed for consumption in space. The experiment, which marks humanity’s first formal study on alcohol absorption in microgravity, took place aboard a parabolic trajectory microgravity flight out of Cape Canaveral, Florida operated by Zero Gravity Corporation (ZERO-G). Yesterday’s flight was the first in a series of microgravity flights qualifying the beer recipe for consumption in space, funded in part by sales of the beverage on Earth.

The Vostok Space Beer, produced as a joint venture between Saber Astronautics Australia and the 4-Pines Brewing Company to serve the emerging space tourism market, is a high-flavor, low-carbonation stout designed for easy drinking both in microgravity and on Earth.  Astronauts4Hire was contracted by the Vostok partners to provide the flight testing service.

Astronauts4Hire Flight Member Todd Romberger was selected to perform the flight research.  Todd sampled the beer during 12 microgravity parabolas, each reproducing the weightless conditions of space for 30 seconds at a time, and recorded qualitative data on beverage taste and drinkability as well as biometric data to gain a first look at alcohol effects the body.

“It was exciting to participate in this ground breaking research,” said Todd.  “I’m happy to say the flight was a success. We provided the customer with the data they needed, and made a little history along the way. Not to mention, the beer was delicious!”

Saber Astronautics Australia Director Dr. Jason Held praised Astronauts4Hire (A4H), saying “this was a challenging experiment which physically stressed the body to test effects specific to drinking beer in microgravity.  It also had many small and repetitive tasks required to get the biometric data, requiring a high degree of hand-eye coordination and concentration to meet strict reporting requirements.  A4H and Todd in particular performed superbly.”

To commemorate the flight, Astronauts4Hire will be selling a limited number of special edition space beer coasters that were flown in zero gravity aboard the historic test flight. Astronauts4Hire is honored to take a prime role in this research, helping to forge the path towards a robust commercial spaceflight industry.

Burt Reynolds bringing ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ to Tampa, without a load of Coors

Burt Reynolds, Smokey and the Bandit, CoorsI’m old enough to remember when you couldn’t buy Coors beer east of the Mississippi, so any time some dude made a road trip to the Western states,  he usually returned to Florida with a case or two of the Rocky Mountain brew in the trunk. Of course, once Coors became available here, it lost a lot of its mystique and became just another run-of-the-mill domestic lager.

But in 1977, Coors still retained that mystic allure, which is why the back of the tractor-trailer in the Burt Reynolds movie “Smokey and the Bandit” that year was filled with cases of bootleg Coors. (“Now, gettin’ to Texarkana and back in 28 hours, that’s no problem.”)

And now that I’ve made the beer connection, here’s the news: Reynolds will be at the historic Tampa Theatre on March 21 for a special showing of the classic trucker action-comedy. He’ll be accompanied by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz as part of the Road to Hollywood Tour, the cable channel’s 10-city buildup to the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.

Tickets are free, but passes will be required. The passes can be obtained at http://www.tcm.com/roadtohollywood beginning March 7.

Reynolds and Mankiewicz will hold a question-and-answer session before the screening of the film, which also stars Sally Field and Jackie Gleason.

Reynolds has deep Tampa and Florida connections. He and his parents moved to Riviera Beach (near West Palm Beach), where his father later became police chief. After an illustrious high-school football career, Reynolds played halfback at Florida State University on a scholarship. Injuries cut short his college football career, and he turned to acting.

In 1982, Reynolds became a co-owner of the Tampa Bay Bandits, a professional football team in the now-defunct USFL.

He starred in the 1993 movie “Cop and a Half,” which was filmed in Tampa – and not well-received by the critics. He currently lives in Jupiter, Florida.

A tragic morning after: Eddie Kirkland dies the day after performing at Dunedin beer event

Eddie Kirkland died in a car crash.

Eddie Kirkland at his final performance.

Eddie Kirkland a well-regarded blues musician and guitarist, rocked the house Saturday night at the Stogies & Stout event at Dunedin Brewery.

Sunday morning, Kirkland, 88, died in Tampa General Hospital, where he was taken after his car was hit by a Greyhound bus on U.S. 98 in Citrus County.

Michael N. Bryant, founder of Dunedin Brewery, had this to say on his Facebook page:

“Meeting him early Sat. morning as he looked over our stage, sitting with him after the show will be branded in my memory.

“I asked where his favorite place to play was, he said, ‘any place there are nice people.’

“I asked if he still liked touring around and he said, ‘I like it better than sitting around.’”

When I saw Eddie before the show, I almost went up to introduce myself, but I got distracted by something else. I’m sorry I didn’t, but I’m honored to have been at his final show in this life.

Thank you, Eddie, for hanging out with the “nice people.”

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans.

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Red Auerbach.
