Beer Bites: Hunahpu and so much more

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenWell, I missed the Florida Brewers Guild Festival last weekend, but I’m looking at the bright side: There are so many great craft beer events going on in Florida that it’s difficult to make it to all of them. That’s a great sign that our craft beer scene is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. Here are some reviews of the festival by other Florida beer writers:

But I won’t be missing one event Saturday: The once-a-year release of Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpu Mayan Chocolate Imperial Stout. There will be much happening throughout the day, with multiple taps set up for pouring the Tampa brewery’s other products, guest beers on tap, live music, food and lots of good people brought together by their love of good beer. For those interested in purchasing the Hunahpu, wrist bands will be given out beginning at 11 a.m., and you can start buying the bottles (limit four per person) at 6 p.m. This means you can either hang out at the brewery or leave to pursue other activities and return from 6 to 9 p.m., to buy your bottle(s) , after you get your wrist band. The bottles will sell for $20 each. Check out Cigar City’s website for more details.

Over the Bridge

Time it right and you could even head over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and do some sampling at the Bradenton Beer Festival on Bradenton’s Main Street before coming back for your bottles. This event is produced by Florida Beer Festivals, a for-profit company that has several other festivals coming up in the state. I’ve been to some of their festivals in the past, and there are too many macrobrews for my taste, but there are enough crafts there to keep most beer geeks happy.  The best part is that a lot of local eateries provide plenty of free food samples to fill your belly, a practice that I wish other Florida festivals would embrace. Tickets are $25 in advance, and some of the proceeds will go to Realize Bradenton, a local nonprofit that supports the city’s arts and culture scene.

The Chronicles of IPA

Up to the north, Dunedin Brewery will crack a cask-conditioned firkin of the first of its new IPA Chronicles project, Black Rye IPA , on Saturday. There will 100 bottles (22 oz.) available for sale today, limit two, and it will be available on tap.

Beer at Disney

Are you imprisoned enjoying a stay on Disney World property this weekend? Fear not, craft beer geeks, there’s something happening for you there. Head over to the Disney Boardwalk Saturday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. for the tapping of Irish Red Lager at Big River Grille & Brewing Works, the only working brewpub on Disney property. $3 pints and free reuben sandwiches, while they last. Details here.

Reminder: Please use our free interactive events calendar to promote your upcoming craft beer events. The link’s on top of the Beer in Florida home page.

That’s it for Beer Bites this week. Feel free to email trips4beer@gmail.com with any ideas or story tips.

Until next time, Florida, remember: We are here! We are Beer!

Orlando craft beer scene will get a new player

Photo by Sam Howitz on FlickrOrlando’s new Amway Center continues to lure new businesses to the downtown area near the Orlando Magic’s home court. Today, a new craft beer-focused restaurant announced that it soon will open its doors on Church Street, directly across from the arena.

Draft Global Beer Lounge & Grill will feature 40 drafts on tap and more than 100 beers in bottles. The décor is described as contemporary, with “custom-lit rooms, plush, private sofa seating and expansive acrylic bar.”

Owner Willie Fisher has more than 18 years’ experience in the restaurant and entertainment business.

“We’re excited to introduce Draft, a combination of an upscale restaurant-bar-lounge with a laid-back vibe,” Fisher said in a statement.  “Draft will place downtown Orlando in the epicenter of the popular craft beer trend and will be a very unique gathering place.”

Draft will be serving lunch and dinner dishes Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

As further details are released, updates will be posted here on Beer in Florida.

Archangel landing in Tampa to create a new brewery

Image courtesy of Archangel BreweryMost homebrewers who stick with it long enough eventually dream of opening a brewery. Few do.

Even fewer have such passion and drive that they uproot their lives and move to a new city to make the dream a reality, knowing that there will be many obstacles and much time before the dream becomes real.

Chris Ward is one of them.

Currently a resident of Long Island, New York, Chris will take his Archangel Brewing Company concept to Tampa, Florida in a few months. Even more remarkably, he’s doing this immediately after another life-changing event – his marriage to fiancé Megan Vaughn, who will be a partner in his brewery. Joining him in a few months will be his brewing partner and best friend, Jesse M. Ganzer.

Chris Ward

Chris, 25, has done a lot of groundwork already, but because of the distance, there is still much to do. He’s researched the laws, scouted out potential sites online, and shopped for used brewing equipment.  Ahead still remains financing, permits and licenses and much more.

“There are certain areas where we are at a disadvantage. We aren’t rich, we don’t have business degrees,” he said. “I have the unconquerable will and determination of an Irish revolutionary. When it comes to legwork and research and getting my hands dirty, I will never stop.”

A lot of research and soul-searching went into the decision to move to Florida, and Tampa in particular. He, Megan and Jesse all have family in the state, and are “huge fans of warm weather.”

“After weighing out all of our options, and discussing the possibilities, Florida was just the right choice for us personally,” Chris said. “The fact that we are huge Disney fanatics doesn’t hurt either.”

Jesse Ganzer

Economic factors and the growing Florida craft beer scene also figured into the decision. He and Megan discussed it with Jesse, and he was “fully on board.”

Reaching out to established brewers and others in the craft beer scene has helped him immensely, Chris said. He’s received advice from Sam Calagione of Delaware’s Dogfish Head Brewery, and among those he’s been in contact with here, besides Beer in Florida, are local beer writer Sean Nordquist, who also pens the And Beer for the Daddy blog , and Cigar City Brewery owner Joey Redner.

Chris said Sean “calls himself an evangelist of craft beer, and that’s pretty appropriate. Having a friend like him supporting us and our product can only be a good thing,”

“Joey is an incredibly busy man but has still taken the time to answer my emails and offer up advice,” Chris said. “I can’t think of any other industry where someone gets an email from someone else stating that they intend to open up shop in their neighborhood, and have it answered not with anger, but delight.”

Chris emphasizes that the support of Megan and Jesse is helping calm the waves of transition. Megan plans to study to becoming a certified cicerone, and will be hands-on in the brewery.

“When I met Sam and Mariah (Calagione) of Dogfish, I remember appreciating how much he relies on her to remember things, stay organized, and just for support in general,” Chris said. “It was endearing and inspiring. Meg is my Mariah. I love her and couldn’t do anything without her.”

Chris met Jesse at work a few years back, and convinced him to join him in homebrewing last year.

“Jesse is a great brewer,” he said. “He has an incredible palate and much like me, really approaches brewing from a culinary mindset. He has a wonderful grasp on flavors and pairings, which really comes in handy when we are brewing our more non-traditional beer.”

Chris and Megan will be moving to Tampa in the middle of May; Jesse plans to join them in October.

As far as the future, Chris has big hopes for Archangel, but he wants to make sure all the pieces are in place.

“I would like to have the business plan squared away by the New Year so that we can begin the quest to find loans and investments, as well as obtain permits and licenses and all of the other fun legal stuff,” Chris said. “I would love to say that we will be christening our tasting room with a grand-opening party two years from this May (or sooner, God willing) at the latest, but I am willing to give it as long as it takes.”

Beer Bites: Long-expected and unexpected beer festivals

image courtesy of florida brewers guildOne of the biggest beer festivals in Florida will be happening Saturday … and I won’t be there. I’ll give you a moment to compose yourself at this awful turn of luck. Well, not really awful. It’s just that I had already planned some family time, which means the Florida Brewers Guild Brewfest in Ybor City on Saturday will not be on my beer calendar this year. But if any of you want to send me some photos and notes about it, I’d be glad to put together a living-vicariously roundup post.

  • You would think with a festival of that caliber happening this weekend, the rest of the state would back off. But no! I came across the website of the inaugural Space Coast Craft Beer Festival in Palm Bay. It’s happening “right in front of the Broken Barrel Tavern.” Sure, you think, a few widely distributed crafts, some mockrobrews and plenty of fizzy yellow beer. But no! Check out this list of the beers being poured there; it’s impressive. I’m penciling in this for next year.
  • Coming up next weekend: Hunahpu release day at Cigar City Brewery in Tampa. See ya there.

That’s it for Beer Bites this week. Feel free to email trips4beer@gmail.com with any ideas or story tips, and please use our interactive calendar to get the word out about any upcoming craft beer events.

Until next time, Florida, remember: We are here! We are Beer!
