Beer Bites: Gators, Burgers and Crawfish

Happy Tax Day! Ha ha, fooled you. Taxes aren’t due till Monday, thanks to an obscure holiday celebrated today in the District of Columbia, Emancipation Day. Of course, if you’re GE, don’t worry. You ain’t paying nothing! But that’s a subject for another blog that I don’t write.

I do write about Beer in Florida, so let’s get to it.

Good Beer and Gators

Dude looks thirsty! Hand him a craft beer.

It’s been awhile since I’ve visited Myakka State Park in Southwest Florida, but here’s some good news from the folks at Brew Kettle Times, the craft beer arm of distributor J.J. Taylor. The Myakka Outpost – besides having some awesome gator stew – also pours several craft beers for your enjoyment. Here’s what they say:

“While enjoying lovely views of the Myakka River and counting alligators from the deck of the Myakka Outpost, you can now also imbibe in a selection from their fine assortment of Local and Specialty beers, including Sierra Nevada, Key West, Monk in the Trunk, Orange Blossom Pilsner, Sam Adams and more. With a delicious assortment of bottles and draft to choose from (including Swamp Ape IPA on tap!), Myakka Outpost is the perfect spot to grab an ice-cold brew right after — or before — a hike through the trails!”

By the way, you can subscribe to the Brew Kettle Times newsletter on the website. It’s a great way to learn about some nice craft beer happenings, like Hoptomic 2011 coming up in June in Tampa. I’ll be writing more about that in the future.

At Least It’s Beer

I wrote a couple of months ago about the new Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant on Church Street in downtown Orlando and how it was going to be the first in the chain to serve beer in Florida. Got an email from a spokesperson a few days ago, and here’s the scoop on what they’re serving: “We have Miller Lite and Yuengling as our domestics (at $2.75 a bottle) and Heineken and Blue Moon as our premium at $3.25 a bottle.”

Well, Yuengling isn’t bad, but if it’s any consolation, they’re open till 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday for the late-night crowd.

Maybe they’ll make some better beers available if you ask them when you’re in there.

The Best Time of the Beer

I’m speaking about arguably the best beer festival in Florida: the Cajun Café on the Bayou Spring Craft Beer Festival (they hold one in the fall, as well). Owners Paul and Rebecca Unwin bring in some of the finest beer in the world to serve at their festivals. Expect to be surprised by the selection, and you can win some really cool beer and gear in the raffle there to support Dunedin Doggie Rescue. This is a festival for the beer geek in all of us. I’ll be there, so stop to say hello if you see me. Make sure to visit the Mike’s Heavenly Homebrews booth to try some of Mike Gyarmathy’s creations before he runs out.

Venetian Beer Tasting

No, it’s neither the Italian city of canals nor beers from that region. Instead, it’s a sampling of several craft brews at La Dolce Vita Wine Bar in downtown Venice, Florida. Though heavily focused on vino, the lounge also offers many craft beers on tap and in the bottle. On Sunday, it will host a beer tasting featuring brews from Florida Brewing, Cigar City, Dogfish Head, Abita, Bell’s and more. The tasting runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and costs $12 per person.

And Now For the Bad News

Over the past few months, several craft brewers have announced they are pulling their products out of certain states and markets because their breweries can’t keep up with rising demand. So far, Florida had been spared – but not this time. Avery Brewing Co. announced plans this week to exit eight states and seven “partial state markets.” Sadly, one of those is Central Florida. Fans of the brewer should stock up while they can.

That’s it for Beer Bites this week. Feel free to email trips4beer@gmail.com with any ideas or story tips.

Dog Rescue Group Benefits from Craft Beer Festival

Dog Rescue, Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen

Dunedin Doggie Rescue at Cajun Cafe Craft Beer Festival.

Great beer festivals are multi-taskers.

They bring craft beer lovers together for camaraderie, they offer a chance for attendees to sample a wide variety of brew brands and styles, and they introduce drinkers of mass-produced lagers to the world of beers that taste good.

But many do something else that often gets amid the clusters of taps and rows of bottles: They raise money for local charities and groups that try to make this a better world for everyone.

The Cajun Café on the Bayou holds two great craft beer festivals each year – in the spring and fall – and for the past three fests, owners Paul and Rebecca Unwin have invited Dunedin Doggie Rescue to hold a raffle of donated beer and beer items to raise funds for the group.

Dunedin Doggie Rescue, based in Dunedin, engenders a noble role in saving the lives of potential canine companions headed to death. According to its website:

  • We rescue dogs from rural kill shelters on their last days (allowing others to adopt first).
  • We bring them to Dunedin, get them fully vetted and up to date with shots and all needed medical treatment.
  • We train and socialize them by bringing them to a variety of public places for showings… and then we find a forever home for them in Dunedin or surrounding areas.

Since it started in 2006, the website says, the not-for-profit group has rescued and placed more than 200 dogs.

And the Florida craft beer community has been a big part of it. Co-founders Ken “KK” Koenig and Cathy Schultz are both certified beer judges. KK is the former president of the Dunedin Brewers Guild and served on the Florida Brewers Guild Board. But he put aside the call of fermenting for the new one.

“Gave up making beer and organizing beer groups for another passion – rescue work,” he said in an email interview, “but we still run most of our rescue events around good beer. From longtime friendships in the beer world I have been able to get breweries, restaurants, distributors and the (Oldsmar) TapHouse to support the cause.”

The Cajun Café craft beer festivals have been some of the most successful fundraising events for DDR, and Paul Unwin is a big admirer of the group’s work.

“They work tirelessly for the well being of the dogs they foster,” Paul said. “Some of these poor old dogs are blind, and almost impossible to foster, but they keep plugging away at it.”

At the last festival, KK said, DDR raised $1,176. The money paid for the vetting (spay/neuter, shots and microchip) for eight dogs.

“It was the biggest raffle I’ve seen at any Florida beer fest,” he said.

The 2011 Cajun Café on the Bayou Spring Craft Beer Festival (named one of the 2011 Top 10 Spring Beer Festivals on my Road Trips for Beer site) will be this Saturday, April 16 at 8101 Park Blvd., Pinellas Park.

Some of the items raffled at the Cajun Cafe Fall Beer Festival in 2010.

Tickets to win some of the more than 100 items of beer and beer paraphernalia will be sold for $1 each by Dunedin Doggie Rescue representatives. All of that money will go to the group.

Festival admission is $35 at the gate. That includes unlimited sampling of the beer poured by local, regional and national craft brewers and homebrewers, as well as a plate of mouthwatering Cajun cuisine, water and soft drinks. A live jazz band will entertain in the café’s covered outdoor pavilion.

If you can’t make it to the festival, you can donate to Dunedin Doggie Rescue by clicking on this link.

Beer Bites: Rookie Honors, Collaborations and Slow Food

Hope everyone had a great Beer Day on Thursday, the anniversary of the official end of Prohibition. Lots of Florida craft beer venues had celebrations and specials to mark the occasion, but the best I could do was a couple of Sam Adams at Chili’s after picking up my wife at the airport. Then, of course, a couple of other craft beers when I got home. Now, back to the news.

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen

Joey Redner. Businessman and cookie server.

Joey Redner, founder and owner of Cigar City Brewery, got a shoutout from Florida Trend magazine in its Economic Yearbook 2011. Here’s what they had to say:

ROOKIE PLAYER: Joey Redner, owner, Cigar City Brewing — Redner’s Cigar City Brewing sold its first bottle of beer in March 2009. In 2010, it sold 3,500 barrels. This year, Redner expects to sell 9,000 barrels or more. Redner, 38, started with two employees, including himself, and is now up to 32.

Congrats, Joey, and all the crew at Cigar City. Well deserved.

A Fest is Born

The inaugural Winter Haven Brew Fest will take place Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. in downtown Winter Haven. Its website says that “1,500 young professionals, ‘foodies’ and craft beer enthusiasts will descend onto downtown Winter Haven’s Main Street to pair, drink and taste some of the best area foods and drink around.”  Well, I fit into one of those categories, but I’m not sure if I’ll make it. Saturday may be when I finally get around to breaking in the home brewing kit that I got for Christmas.

Collaborative Ventures

Meanwhile, back at Cigar City, the brewery will host a Bruery tap takeover today. The Bruery folks will be in town to brew the other half of the collaboration beer that Cigar City made last year at the California brewery. Of course, among the offerings will be Marron Acidifie, the first half of the collaboration. Loko Cuisine will offer menu items with a “Spanglish” Theme. Cigar City will have several of its beers available as well.

Can’t make it to Tampa? You’ll get another chance Sunday at Orlando’s premier craft beer bar Redlight Redlight, which will hook its taps up to kegs of many of the same beers offered at Cigar City’s event. It runs from 1 to 9 p.m.

Bring Your Own Bagpipes (Not Really)

The folks at Dunedin Brewery are helping the community celebrate its 45th annual Dunedin Highland Games with a performance by Celtic/Rock band Seven Nations at 9 p.m. Cover is $10, but your first pint is free with admission. They’ll also be pouring a Highland Games Smoked Porter, brewed especially for the occasion.

Slow Food, Cold Beer

There’s a pretty cool event happening in Northeast Florida on Sunday. Twenty-four local farms 24 farms in St. John’s, Baker, Bradford, Duval and Putnam counties will open their gates for the community to learn about local food production during the Slow Food Tour-de-Farm. Jacksonville’s Intuition Ale Works will be pouring their brews at Black Hog Farm in East Palatka. Also, through April Intuition will donate a dollar from every beer sold on Thursdays to the St. Johns Riverkeeper to mark River Month. The advocacy group’s mission is to work for clean and healthy waters in the St. Johns River. Intuition brewed a special beer for the occasion, too: Riverkeeper Red.

These are a few of my favorite things …

Mr. Dunderbacks in New Tampa will host a Belgian Beer and Cheese Pairing on Tuesday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. with Bob Sylvester from Saint Somewhere Brewing. There will also be a Beer 101 class on “how to make and enjoy the diversity of the Belgian beer making craft.”

Beer Bites: Baseball, Growlers, Tappings and More

As I write this on Thursday afternoon, heavy storms are still battering Central Florida. Sounds like a good excuse to get comfortable, open a beer and tap out this week’s Beer Bites.

Play Ball!

Cigar City beer now available at Tropicana Field

Tonight is the Tampa Bay Rays’ opening game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, and with the start of the 2011 baseball season comes with good news for craft beer fans. According to a story in the St. Petersburg Times, The Brewhouse at the Trop is updating its menu and will be serving more craft beer, starting with taps of Cigar City Brewing beer. (Insert your own tired baseball cliché here).

Growlin’ in the Swamp

Gainesville’s Swamphead Brewery started filling growlers this week at its tasting room. Now its customers can take home some of the award-winning brews in 32 oz. and 1 gallon jugs. Not sure what a growler is or how it works? Swamphead created a handy-dandy “Growler Information Sheet” for your education and edification.

Grand Openings

The World of Beer chain has opened another one of its bars in West Palm Beach, its lucky 13th in the state. Here’s a review from the Palm Beach Post.

Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill, across from the Amway Center in downtown Orlando, is scheduled to open Thursday night. Owners of the upscale eatery have promised a craft beer focus with 40 drafts on tap and more than 100 bottled brands. The Draft website does not have a beer list on it yet, and an inquiry from Beer in Florida seeking a list has not yet been answered. There was a soft opening Wednesday night with local VIPS and politicos, but apparently my invitation was lost along the way. The Daily City blog did post some photos here.

A new Total Wine & More opened Thursday in Wellington in South Florida, but don’t worry if you missed it. The grand opening celebration will continue for three solid weeks!  The Total Wine stores offer a huge variety of craft beers from around the world, including some that are exclusive to the chain, at great prices.  Oh yeah, they also sell wine and liquor.

Tappings and such

Big River Grille & Brewing Works at Disney’s Boardwalk will tap its Maibock spring seasonal on Saturday at 2 p.m. Appetizers will be available while they last, and Maibock pints will be $3 until 4 p.m.

Next Friday, April 8, The Bruery from California will take over many of the taps at the Cigar City Tasting Room in Tampa. The Bruery folks will be in town to brew the other half of the collaboration beer that Cigar City brewed last year in California. Of course, among the offerings will be Marron Acidifie, the first half of the collaboration. Loko Cuisine will offer menu items with a “Spanglish” Theme.

It’s a slow beer festival weekend. The only one I could find was Brews Around The Zoo at the Central Florida Zoo. Not much information about the beer offerings on its website, other than “enjoy a wide variety of unique craft beers from around the world.” Other than annoying the hell out of me with the misuse of the word “unique,” that doesn’t tell me much. Oh, wait, now I see on the Central Florida Zoo Facebook page that it’s “unique Anheuser-Busch beers from around the world,” then later “delectable wines and craft beers.” OK, I’m confused, but I don’t think I’ll be attending. I suppose it’s a fundraiser, so if you’re a fan of the zoo, that might be a reason to go.

Craft Beer Find of the Week

A reader turned me on to the existence of the South Street restaurant and bar down in Naples. Its website boasts a pretty decent tap list, and I respect the list because it puts the few taps of macro crap down at the bottom under “Stuff Ya Know,” which I can almost hear being uttered with an exasperated sigh. This is especially good news because the Naples-Cape Coral area seems to be lagging behind the rest of the state in its craft beer scene.

A couple of my beer-bloggin’ buddies penned some reviews of craft beer bars recently mentioned in this space. Sean Nordquist wrote on The Hop Press about Spooky’s Black Cat Café in Orlando, and Doug Brumley, a.k.a. The Fledgling Brewer, chronicled his Road Trip from Nashville to The Porch in Key West.
