Craft Beer Cruise is a Sell-Out

Image Courtesy of SunQuest CruisesSorry to be a day late and a dollar short on this, but a craft beer-focused dinner cruise sailing from the Panhandle on Thursday has sold out.

According to Sunquest Cruises, the event aboard the yacht Solaris will feature a Southern-style five-course dinner paired with craft beers brewed by 30A Brewing Co. Brewmaster Hank Standridge.

Standridge studied at the Siebel Institute in Chicago and the Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany. Being served are Blonde Ale, American Pale Ale, South Coast India Pale Ale, Amber Ale and Stout.

Sunquest sails its dinner cruises from Baytowne Marina at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

The fact that the cruise sold out hopefully indicates that more will be scheduled.

You haven’t heard of 30A Brewing Co.? Neither did I until I saw this announcement. Stay tuned, though, I plan to write more about it soon.

Beer writing in other places

Image courtesy of Hoppy EndingsYes, I’ve been known to get a beer story or two published in other media besides here and my other site Road Trips for Beer.

This week, I filled in for Alan Shaw, the resident Beer Geek columnist for Ticket Sarasota, the fantastic entertainment weekly published by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, my former workplace.

In the column, I write about the latest addition to Sarasota’s growing craft beer scene: Hoppy Endings.

Here’s a link to the column. For those of you in Southwest Florida who still subscribe to the print newspaper, you’ll get your copy of Ticket Sarasota delivered Thursday, or you can pick it up gratis at various locations in the Sarasota area.

Beer Bites: Open Doors, Outdoor Brewing and Cuban Cuisine

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen

A popular place to recycle beer

Earth Day and Good Friday all rolled into one, a holiday I like to call Good Beer on Earth Day.

Of course, you should always recycle your beer bottles and cans.

In fact, I’m going to recycle about 50 of them tomorrow because it’s bottling day for my first batch of home brew!

Now, onto the news.

Open Door Policy

Cold Storage Craft Brewery, the rapidly growing maker of the Florida Avenue line of ales, will open its doors to the public Saturday at its Tampa facility. Admission is $10, but you’ll get a Florida Avenue pint glass to keep and up to three samples while you’re there. And it’s always nice to meet the folks behind the beer in your glass.

O-Town Happenings

The Central Florida Home Brewers 2011 Brew in the Park will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Don Knight Park in Sanford. Here’s what the group’s website says about it: “This is a terrific way to share your experience, brew your favorite brew, learn new techniques, or catch up with old friends and make new ones. There will be grilled foods. And everyone is encouraged to bring a side dish. Children are welcome. Sorry, no pets allowed.” CFHB members are free. Guests are just $5. RSVP to events@cfhb.org. or contact Charlie Bell at (407) 267-6270 so they can get  headcount to make sure there’s enough food.

Padrino’s Cuban Bistro at 13586 Village Park Drive, Suite 304, in Orlando will hold a Cigar City Brewing beer-pairing dinner on Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. On the menu will be Tostones with Chorizo; Roast Pork; Ropa Vieja; Paella; and Tres Leches, each paired with a beer from the Tampa craft brewer selected to enhance the flavors of each course. The cost is $35 per person plus tax and gratuity, and reservations are required. RSVP by calling 407.251.5107 or emailing info@padrinoscubanbistro.com. Advance tickets can be purchased here.

Down Sarasota Way

Howie and Dawn Hochberg, owners of the Cock n Bull pub in Sarasota, are again hosting the Noise Ordinance 2 concert. They have long been supporters of both the local craft beer and music scenes, and NO2 will feature 39 local acts playing 20-minute shows beginning at noon on Saturday at the pub. Full details are in this week’s Ticket Sarasota magazine.

Don your most festive toque and prepare for a taste of the Great White North at Mr. Beery’s Sarasota during its “O, Canada” party Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. There will be specials on Molson, a showing of the classic “Strange Brew” comedy and plenty of bad Canadian accents, and since it’s still “season” in Sarasota, likely a lot of real ones.

Meanwhile, there’s yet another player in the Sarasota craft beer scene, and I’ll be writing about it next week as I fill in for Ticket Sarasota beer columnist Alan Shaw, a.k.a. The Beer Geek. Here’s a sneak peek.

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites. Have a safe and happy Easter weekend, and let me know if you find a beer that goes well with marshmallow Peeps.

Reminder: Please use our free interactive calendar to promote your upcoming craft beer events. The link’s at the top of this page.

Feel free to email trips4beer@gmail.com with any ideas or story tips.

Until next time, Florida, remember: We are here! We are Beer!

Cigar City label contest finalists revealed

Photo by Gerard WalenIn January, Cigar City Brewing and Hampton Arts Management invited artists to submit label designs for the Tampa brewery’s 2011 release of Tocobaga Red Ale.

The 10 finalists have been chosen. You can see the bottle labels here. The winning artist will be announced at the craft brewery’s tasting room during the release of the ale, and the 10 finalists’ work will be displayed there through July 10.
