Beer Bites: Big Brews, New Labels and Beer in the Wasteland

Happy Seis de Mayo. Too bad Cinco de Mayo fell on a school night. I’m sure everyone behaved themselves and you’re all feeling chipper this morning.

Speaking of Mexico and beer, here’s a Los Angeles Times article about the struggling craft beer industry in that country. After reading this, it sure puts into perspective how lucky we are to be living north of the border. I hope these brewers of cerveza buena keep up the good fight against the big boys until they gain a greater voice in their market.

Without further ado, here’s what’s happening in the Florida craft beer scene these days.

Big Brew

Image Courtesy of American Homebrewers AssociationSaturday is National Homebrew Day and it will be celebrated across the country at AHA Big Brew events. Here’s what the American Homebrewers Association has to say about it:

In 1988, May 7th was announced before Congress as National Homebrew Day. The American Homebrewers Association created AHA Big Brew as an annual event to celebrate National Homebrew Day around the world. AHA Big Brew is held each year on the first Saturday in May.

Homebrewing has been practiced in America since the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Today there are an estimated 750,000 homebrewers in the United States. Homebrewers are passionate about brewing beer and love to share that passion with others.

AHA Big Brew is about homebrewers getting together all over the world to share their love for the hobby.

There are plenty of Big Brew events happening across The Sunshine State, but rather than list them all, here’s a link where you can find a list of Florida homebrewing groups.

Contact the closest one to you and ask what it has going on. (Feel free to list any events in the comments section for this post). Coincidentally, I bottled my first homebrew two weeks ago, which means it will be ready to drink on Saturday. Prost!

Local tastings

The Total Wine & More store at 4880 Park St. N., St. Petersburg, will have a Cigar City Brewery tasting event today from 5 to 7 p.m. Another event featuring Tarpon Springs’ Saint Somewhere Brewery will be May 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. Call the store for details: 727-544-6018.

Designs on Beer

Cigar City Brewery recently announced that it is redesigning the labels for all of its 750 ml bottles, including its fourth edition of 110k+OT, being released later this month. You can get a sneak peek here.

A Whole Week of This?

May 16-22 will mark American Craft Beer Week. There will be plenty of events to celebrate it across Florida, and next week’s Beer Bites will include a roundup of them. If your venue or group is having an event, please send me an email trips4beer@gmail.com so I can include it.

Beer Store Discovery

Naples is one of those pockets of Florida that seems to remain a craft beer wasteland, though I just found out about a store there for the craft beer fan. Other than the vino touted in its title, Decanted Wines advertises a pretty decent beer and cider list. I don’t see any beer tastings on its online schedule, but it’s worth keeping an eye on it.  By the way, I have wind of some more exciting craft beer news coming down in Naples. Stay tuned.

Gator Chompin’

Finally, though I can’t attest to the type of beer they serve these days, Linger Lodge in Manatee County will hold the Gator Creek Bluegrass Festival & Gumbo on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Plenty of bluegrass bands will be picking on stage, and you’re sure to get your fill of gators – on the menu, on the walls and maybe even in the Braden River. If the idea of hundreds of taxidermied animals watching you while you eat makes you nervous … well, this probably isn’t the place for you. Find more details here.

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites.

Another Great Beer Fest at the Cajun Cafe

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenIt’s been nearly a month since the Cajun Cafe’s Spring Craft Beer Festival, but I’ve been lax in posting about it.

Once again, owners Paul and Rebecca Unwin put on a great festival. There were so many great beers that I had to limit myself to only those that I’ve never tried before, and even then, many beers went undrunk.

Some of the highlights, at least for me:

  • Bell’s Hopslam, which in the middle of the fest was run through a Randall of Simcoe hops. This was my first introduction to the coveted IPA.
  • Coronado’s Idiot IPA. An excellent representation of the style. Hopheads need to keep an eye out for this one.
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Stout. This was at one of several homebrew stouts, and I apologize because I can’ t remember which one. Filtered through a Randall of peanut butter and chocolate chunks. Delicious. (UPDATE: Found out the stout was brewed by Jessica Domigan, a member of the Pinellas Urban Brewers Guild.)
  • Lager Haus Brewery & Grill out of Palm Harbor was there pouring a few of its brewers’ creations, including the tasty yet ass-kicking 44 Magnum, a 22% ABV monster. Thankfully, the sample was only 2 oz. Still, I had to sit down and take a water break afterward.
  • Here are some photos I took at the festival on the Beer in Florida Facebook page.

If you missed it, don’t worry. There will be another one in November, date TBA. Stay tuned.

Beer Bites: New Beer, New Bottle and a New Bar

Well, if you’re reading this the Wedding Royale has concluded, unless Prince William got cold feet and left Kate at the altar. So now we can concentrate on the real news. And by “real news,” I mean craft beer in Florida.

Now On Tap

Image courtesy of Brewer's PizzaBrewer’s Pizza in Orange Park (a suburb of Jacksonville) just put its first house-brewed beer on tap: Moon Dance Stout. The restaurant has been serving a bunch of craft beer since it opened, but now its brewing system is online. I’ve penciled in a road trip to that area next month, so if it happens, I’ll definitely stop by Brewer’s Pizza and give you a report.

Double the Geekiness

Finally, an event to finally bring together the “Star War”s geek and the beer geek. I’m speaking of “Low Brow Star Wars Art Extravaganza” at Mr. Beery’s Sarasota. There will be a exhibition of “Star Wars”-inspired art by Kyle Cross and Brian Braun, a raffle for bottles of New England Brewing’s much-coveted Imperial Stout Trooper, a showing of the trilogy (I’m assuming the “good one”), and much more. Details here. Oh, and feel free to attend in casual Cantina costume.

Now in Bottles

Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m., Swamp Head Brewery in Gainesville will hold its first bottle release. The beer will be Saison Du Swamp, described as a “Floridian interpretation of the traditional Belgian harvest ale.” Fewer than 800 bottles will be available.

More Craft Beer in Sarasota

I filled in this week for the vacationing Alan Shaw, the Ticket Sarasota Beer Geek columnist. In the column, I wrote about a new craft beer bar in Sarasota called Hoppy Endings. Here’s the link.

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites.

Buccaneer Player Helping to Put Nuts in Your Mouth

Nut bags

You would think that with ownership stakes in 14 restaurants and being the union rep for Tampa Bay Buccaneers players during turbulent labor negotiations, Jeff Faine would have little time to worry about putting nuts into people’s mouths while they’re drinking beer.

But according to an article in the St. Petersburg Times, the Bucs’ center now owns a part of Poppa D’s Nuts, a company based in Orlando.

According to the article, “Faine secured a 10 percent stake in Poppa D’s Nuts — the brainchild of USF grad and 35-year-old Orlando sportscaster Lee Goldberg — in return for promoting a beer nut line started on a shoestring and getting it sold in more places like arenas and stadiums.”

The nuts, currently served as finger food at World of Beer pubs and Faine’s restaurants, are also now available at 7-Elevens across Florida.

An interesting side note from the story: Faine reportedly is searching for a Tampa location to open his Barley House restaurant. Judging from the name, this might be an appealing eatery for craft beer geeks.

By the way, there is no “Poppa D.” It’s a play on words. Think “Pop-a-these nuts.”
