Beer Bites: Pugs, Dogfish and Cheetahs

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. For much of the country, that means wheeling the grill out of the shed for the first cookout of the summer. I don’t have a shed, but that’s OK because here in Florida, my grill has a permanent home on the lanai. Whatever your backyard, beach or park plans are, be sure to have some tasty local craft beer on hand. And on Monday, pause for a few minutes to remember those warriors who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

On with Beer Bites.

Pints and Pugs

Won't you have a pint ... for me?

Pug Rescue of Florida (PROof) will hold a fundraiser Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at PourHouse Tampa. In 2010, the group helped rescue more than 200 pugs and incurred over $100,000 in expenses to provide care.  There will be $4 drink specials, a raffle and live music, with proceeds benefitting PROof. I’ve visited PourHouse a few times, and it’s a fun place to enjoy a pint or three of craft beer, even when you aren’t helping little dogs with those cute pushed-in faces.

Need Mead?

The Central Florida Home Brewers will hold Meadllennium 2011n Saturday and Sunday in Sanford. The group says it is the longest-running mead-only competition in the world. This year, the CFHB will combine it with its annual Mead Making event. Get the details here.

Double the Dogfish

My good friends at DosBeerigos.com posted about not one, but TWO beer-pairing dinners next week featuring craft brews from Delaware’s Dogfish Head. The first will be Tuesday at Sweetwater Bar and Grill in Boynton Beach; the second at Coral Gables’ newest craft beer spot The Local. Read about it here.

Another Craft Brewer Joining the Scene

Also in South Florida, word comes to us from the Miami New Times blog about a new craft brewery set to open its doors in about a year. Liz Tracy interviews Luis Brignoni, who’s heading the Wynwood Brewing Company project. Always great to see another brewery entering Florida’s craft beer fold.

A Long-Expected Party

Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing will officially release its 2011 Tocobaga Ale on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m. The winning label design, chosen in a contest, will also be unveiled. If you’re lucky enough to snag one of the first 80 bottles, brewery owner Joey Redner and the winning artist will sign it for you.

Pucker Up

Redlight Redlight, the legendary Orlando craft beer bar named third-best in the world by RateBeer.com, will hold a Sour Fest on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Here’s the initial list of beers to be poured: Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition, Alvinne Wild Undressed, BFM Abbaye du St. Bon Chien 2009, Ommegang Rouge!, Hanssens Oude Gueze Cask!, Hanssens Oude Kriek Cask!, Saint Somewhere Lumiere Rouge, Saint Somewhere Lumiere Rouge Blanc, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Ichtegem’s Grand Cru, Cigar City Sea Bass Aged in a Wine Barrel, The Bruery Hottenroth, The Bruery/Cigar City Marrón Acidifié, Lagunitas Gueuze. Redlight Redlight is at 745 Bennett Road.

Shout It Out

  • Chris Ward, whom I wrote about on this site a few months back, has made his move to Tampa from New York and soon will begin work on getting his Archangel Brewing Company up and running within the next year or two. I finally had the pleasure earlier this week of meeting Chris and his lovely new bride, Megan, in person. We sat down and had a few pints at the Big River Grille and Brewing Works, the brew pub at the Disney Boardwalk Resort. We were joined by head brewer Kent Waugh, a great guy and talented brewer. If you get a chance to try his creations (the limited-release Soleil IPA was fantastic!), do so.
  • I spent Thursday as Theme Park Dad, my alter-ego when I write for my lovely wife’s family travel site Theme Park Mom, covering a preview of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s new Cheetah Hunt, which opens to the public today. There were some technical issues with the coaster during the afternoon, so I left the park for a couple of hours to grab a bite to eat and a couple of craft beers at the nearby Mr. Dunderbak’s. As I was getting ready to leave, the guy next to me at the bar struck up a conversation about some home brew he had brought in for folks to taste. Turns out the guy was J.B. Ellis, the owner of Mr. Dunderbak’s and one of the first players in Florida’s craft beer scene (back when there really wasn’t one). It was an honor to meet him; unfortunately, I had to get back to Busch Gardens and couldn’t chat with him long, I hope to get back soon. (BTW, Cheetah Hunt was awesome!)

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites. Enjoy your long weekend and please drink responsibly.

Beer Festivals Will Thrill Florida Hopheads

June looks like it will be a hoppy month in Florida for lovers of Humulus lupulus, also know as “hops.”

A pair of festivals in the Tampa Bay area will showcase IPAs and other beers crafted to maximize the characteristics of the hops flowers, used in the brewing process to impart aromas and bitterness, and help to preserve the brew.

image courtesy of Dunedin BreweryFirst up will be the Dunedin Brewery’s India Pale Ale Festival 2011 on Saturday, June 4, beginning at 7 p.m. This event will be similar to its Stogies and Stout festival in February, but this time all of the brewery’s taps will flow with hoppy brews, including about 10 brewed right on the premises. Guest beers will include Terrapin Beer Co.’s Hopsecutioner, Cigar City Brewing Twigs and Berry (a cedar-aged IPA with juniper berries) and even some of coveted Bell’s Hopslam.

Admission of $30 in advance includes a sampling cup for generous pours of the offerings, snacks and live music. Food will be available for purchase. Get your tickets ASAP; the event will sell out.

Beer distributor JJ Taylor is throwing what looks to be a great bash that features not only hoppy beers, but a variety of complementary – and complimentary – food samples provided by local artisan restaurants, specialty grocers and craft beer bars.

The major sponsor is a little brewery out of Chico, California, that you may have heard about: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. And the beer list is phenomenal, with more likely to be added.

Tickets are $58.50 and can be purchased over the phone by calling 813-229-STAR, online or at the Straz Center box office. Admission includes beer and food samples, and live music. You might want to consider booking a hotel in downtown Tampa: The Hoptomic website mentions something about 5 oz. pours!

Beer Bites: PSAs, Honey and Stogies

Hope everyone is enjoying American Craft Beer Week by visiting and supporting your local craft brewers. And in Florida, we’ve got some dandy ones. In fact,

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen

Ran into these guys last weekend in Cleveland at the International Beer Fest. Yay Cigar City!

Matador.com, the online arm of a travel writing media company, has named “Tampa Bay” one of the 20 Best Beer Towns in America.

We interrupt Beer Bites for an important public service announcement. The city is “Tampa.” Tampa Bay is a body of water. If you want to refer to the greater metropolitan region, please say “the Tampa Bay area.” Unless you call the city of San Francisco “San Francisco Bay,” in which case you’re beyond help. We now return to Beer Bites.

I’d Like a Beer, Honey

As part of its celebration of American Craft Beer Week, Dunedin Brewery is releasing its new Local Honey Ale today, made with 100 percent raw Florida honey. Sounds pretty sweet!

Help Those Who Help Others

The St. Petersburg World of Beer on Fourth Street is holding a fundraiser Sunday for the Suncoast Center Inc.,  a local nonprofit that helps a lot of people in a lot of ways. For a $20 donation, attendees will receive free Florida Avenue Ale drafts and food from Westshore Pizza. It starts at 3 p.m., and the bar will have the Tampa Bay Rays on the tubes. The fundraiser runs until 7, or whenever the Rays game ends.

A Look Behind the Curtain

Cold Storage Craft Brewery, the brewer of Florida Avenue Ales, will again open its doors to the public and allow a behind-the-scenes look at the magic of fermentation. Admission is $10, but that includes a pint glass and three tastings. All ages are welcome, but of course only those 21 and older can drink the beer.

Hollywood Nights

I’m not familiar with Hollywood Vine down in, where else, Hollywood Florida, but it’s holding a free craft beer tasting tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. The price certainly is right.

Jax Fest

The third annual Jacksonville Craft & Import Beer Festival will be tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Organizers promise there will be more than 35 breweries pouring upwards of 200 beers, including some locally brewed.

Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Finally, I wrote about this earlier this week – and mentioned it in the guest column I did for Ticket Sarasota’s Beer Geek – but it looks so interesting that I’ll give it another shoutout. Backroom Cigar Corp. in Celebration is teaming with the Big River Grille and Brewing Works at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort for a beer and cigar pairing tonight beginning  at 6 p.m. But not just any cigar. The HOPZ Craft Beer Cigar is infused with Centennial hops. Can’t wait to try it. I plan on being there, so if you attend be sure to say hi.

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites.

Flippers Pizzeria Expanding Its Craft Beer Menu

Orlando-based Flippers Pizzeria will offer more craft beer at its restaurants.

I’m a big fan of the Flippers Pizzeria chain. There’s one right around the corner from my house that I enjoy visiting not only because it serves delicious fresh food, but also because it offers a couple of beers from Orlando Brewing.

Now, I’ve learned that this restaurant is one of four in the chain that serves the locally produced brew, but according to a news release posted today, the beers will now become available at all 11 of the Orlando-based company’s stores.

Here’s what it says:

Wine and beer have always been available at Flippers Pizzeria, setting it apart from other area pizzerias, but now, in an effort to further enhance the guest experience, Flippers Pizzeria is offering craft-style beers on tap. The new offering is in response to an increasing consumer interest in craft beers.

According to (VP of Operations Ben) Richardson, four Flippers Pizzeria locations currently offer the craft beers, with further restaurants following suit later this year.

“Our draft beers were specifically selected to complement our pizzas,” said Richardson. The company is currently offering two organic local brews from Orlando Brewery on draft, including Blonde Ale and Pale Ale. It is also offering Sam Adams Boston Lager and Sam Adams Seasonal.

The release does not specify if there will be any more craft beers offered, but any time a local company reaches out to a local brewer to showcase its products, it’s a good thing not only for the craft beer fan, but also for the economy.

The company plans other improvements for its customers. Here’s a link to the entire release.
