Rheingold Beer in Florida Total Wine & More Stores

Image courteys of Drinks Americas HoldingsNew York transplants in Florida who have missed the taste of Rheingold Beer can now slake their thirst with the historic brand first brewed in 1883.

Drinks Americas Holdings Ltd., a developer and marketer of beverage products, announced today that Rheingold is being sold statewide in Florida at Total Wine & More’s 16 Florida megastores.

“It is a great milestone to be selling Rheingold in Total Wine & More throughout Florida,” said Joe Belli, national sales manager for Rheingold Beer. “The great taste of Rheingold, New York’s Beer, is now available in a state where many transplanted New Yorkers live who are very familiar with the beer’s great history.”

Rheingold is available in six packs of 12 oz. bottles and 12-packs of cans in Florida.

Here’s a short history of Rheingold Beer, from the brand’s website:

Rheingold Beer, founded in 1883, is a New York beer that held 35% of the state’s beer market from 1950 to 1960.  The Company was sold by the founding Liebman family in 1963.

According to the New York Times, “Rheingold Beer was once a top New York brew guzzled regularly by a loyal cadre of workingmen who would just as soon have eaten nails as drink another beer maker’s suds.”  At the center of its media campaign was the “Miss Rheingold” pageant.  Beer Drinkers voted each year on the young lady whowould be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements.  In the 1940s and 1950s in New York, the selection of Miss Rheingold was as highly anticipated as the race for the White House!

When Nat King Cole became the first major black entertainer to host a television show, advertisers stayed away – but not Rheingold!  Rheingold was the New York regional sponsor Cole’s show.  As early as 1965, Rheingold aired television ads featuring African Americans, Puerto Rican and Asian actors, to appeal to its racially diverse customer base.

The Company’s headquarters was in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.  Rheingold was the official beer of the New York Mets, and its advertisements included John Wayne, Jackie Robinson and the Marx Brothers.

The label was revived in 1998. According to an October 18, 1999 New York Observer report, The Rheingold Brewing Company LLC bought the brand. When Rheingold re-launched, they revived the Miss

Rheingold Pageant.  The new Miss Rheingold contestants no longer wore ball gowns and white gloves – they had tattoos.

In 2005, Drinks Americas of Wilton CT purchased Rheingold Brewing and reformulated the product for follow through distribution throughout the US.

Beer Bites: Mood Rings, Anniversaries and Birthdays

What's your mood?

Last night, I went to a sneak preview of the new kids movie “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer” with my wife and my now second-grader daughter. It was a fine film, and if you have kids age 6 and up, they’ll love it, especially if they’re fans of the book series.

What does this have to do with Florida craft beer? Not much, other than I wanted to point out that the title character exhibits enough mood swings that you might wonder if there is such a condition as elementary school menopause. Similarly, reading this week’s Beer Bites column will likely make your ‘70s-era mood ring change colors like a seizure-inducing disco dance floor light show.

First the Bad News

The Oldsmar Tap House will be closed after today because it has been sold. Since its opening in 2008, the Tap House has been consistently named to national and local lists of top beer bars, and has amassed a legion of loyal local clientele. But the news isn’t all bad. According to the Tap House Facebook Page, the venue will reopen as a second location of Tampa-based House of Brews. If you’re able to do it today, swing by the Tap House to toast this fine establishment.

And the Good News

Orlando Sentinel columnist Kelly Fitzpatrick reports today of another craft beer venue opening in Winter Park. Taps Wine & Beer Eatery features 350 beers in the cooler and 28 on tap. It also offers an extensive wine and liquor selection. In her column, Fitzpatrick criticizes some of the servers’ knowledge of beer, but she acknowledges that it’s still a new operation and there are some kinks to be worked out. This new establishment joins brewpub Shipyard Emporium and gastropub The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park, an encouraging sign that the Orlando suburb could look attractive for more craft-beer venues.

Happy Anniversary

Down in South Florida, there will be a celebration of MikeLovesBeer.com’s third anniversary at the Funky Buddha Lounge in Boca Raton. Mike Jurewicz helms the popular beer blog, and he’s also half of the United We Drink weekly podcast, along with Phil Palmisano, one of the founders of DosBeerigos.com. The public is welcome to drop in for the celebration, which promises music, beer, comedy, beer, laughter, beer, and more, including some of the best craft beer from Florida and elsewhere.

Happy Birthday

The Lager Haus Brewery & Grill in Palm Harbor recently started offering a birthday treat for its Lagerhauser customers: A free beer and dinner, up to a $15 value, on their birthdays. How does one become a Lagerhauser? The answer from the Facebook page: “Send an email to office@lagerhausbrewery.com that you like to become a Lagerhauser. I will reply and you show or print the reply to the bartender. Then they will give you an ID. All freebies are sent via email to you.” Sounds like a deal!

New Brew Tours

Tampa Bay Brew Bus has updated the list of its upcoming tours. On June 25, the bus will hit Saint Somewhere in Tarpon Springs, Lagerhaus, World of Beer Westchase and a Mellow Mushroom. On tap for July 21 is an all-inclusive trip to the Tampa Bay Rays versus the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field. All tours leave from Cigar City Brewing. For more details, click here.

Barrel-aged release

Lagniappe Brewing Company in Minneola will hold a pre-release party for its barrel-aged Effinheimer Reserve Ale on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Enjoy free wings and live music. I’m really looking forward to this because I know owner and head brewer Brad Banker has been really excited about this creation.

Finally

I published an interview with Will Lawson this week on my other site, Road Trips for Beer. Will recently moved to Naples from Michigan and is gung-ho on the way to opening his Naples Beach Brewery, with a target opening date in 2012. Naples has been a dry spot in Florida’s booming craft beer scene, and I’m glad to see some action on that front.

I hope this week’s edition of Beer Bites didn’t burn out your mood ring. As usual with Florida’s growing craft beer scene, it’s mostly good news.

Hoptomic Festival in Tampa Will Be a Hophead’s Dream

Image courtesy of JJ Taylor DistributingComing up on June 18 will be a new festival for the Tampa Bay area, the Hoptomic Bitter Beer & Food Festival. The venue will be the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) in downtown Tampa. The man behind the festival, Matt Abdoney is currently lead account manager of craft and specialty brands at distributor JJ Taylor.

Matt said he began is “heavy beer-geekness” in 2001 on the RateBeer.com site, researching the beers he found tasty and interesting. He soon befriended the owner of RateBeer.com and offered to help administrate the Southern U.S. “for content and authenticity,” he said. “Pro-bono of course.”

In 2003, Matt accepted a sales position for Unique Beers, a small independent wholesaler of craft and specialty beers and one of only three such distributors in Florida at the time. His sales territory stretched from Pasco County to Naples.

In 2007, JJ Taylor purchased Unique Beers, and that’s how Matt arrived at his present position.

“J.J. Taylor’s Craft & Specialty beer portfolio is truly one of the more amazing of any one wholesaler in the entire country,” Matt wrote in an email.  “I do consulting for hundreds of On-Premise & Off-Premise retailers to help them better embrace and educate their staff and Craft & Specialty beer consumers. I also assist J.J. Taylor FL in the prospect and attainment of new Craft & Specialty brewers for distribution in Florida; and serve in the success of growing and building brands in our marketplace.”

Matt was kind enough to answer a few questions about the Hoptomic festival.

Beer in Florida: How did the Hoptomic Festival come about?

Matt Abdoney: I have been involved in organizing several dozens of beer festivals for upwards of 11 years. I have been working with and around major “hopheads” every day for these many years. I see how passionate these hoppy beer adoring folks are about their craving. Thus, I began working on a hoppy beer festival concept in my head and slowly putting onto paper over the course of several years. Hoppy beer sales; IPA and Pale Ale particularly, have been leading the craft consumer trends for many years, and the integration of local independent retailers was the natural fit. I have long envisioned using Tampa’s STRAZ Center as the venue and philanthropy to donate to; it is a remarkable venue and a critical part of the Bay Area’s community. Then at last, JJ Taylor FL gave me the green light to move forward.

BiF. Landing Sierra Nevada as the major sponsor seems to be quite a coup. What’s the story there?

MA: Sierra Nevada Brewery was certainly the most natural fit to sponsor HOPTOMIC 2011. I work closely with Sierra Nevada every day and we have a great relationship together. They are one of the largest craft brewers in America and in JJ Taylor’s beer portfolio. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was an enormously revolutionary beer. At 37 IBUs, it was considered an “extreme brew” when it was first brewed 30 years ago! Pale Ale was followed by brews like Bigfoot Barleywine, Celebration, Torpedo IPA and their fresh-hop Harvest brew. Sierra Nevada is just a remarkable and time-honored, trend-setting brewery. For all intents and purposes, we asked Sierra Nevada very nicely to be the HOPTOMIC 2011 title sponsor, and fortunately for us, they accepted.

BiF: When attendees walk in the door at the Straz Center, what will they see?

MA: The Straz Center is a beautiful venue; a large open area, glass walled from floor to ceiling on the west side along the river. There will be nearly 40 booths pouring beer and/or serving small portions of food all along the perimeter of the venue. Hoppy beers will be flowing en masse, and a live band will fill the air with some bluesy rock tunes. There will be a fantastic tented area outside along the river as well that will be a staged area offering more HOPTOMIC beers and restaurants. Many brewery representatives will be in attendance to answer questions about their beers, and the volunteers will be in bright green Sierra Nevada shirts. The first booth you will encounter when you walk in will be non-alcoholic offerings, water, boutique sodas, teas, etc., as well as information about how to obtain a cab if needed. We do ask that all in attendance be safe and know their personal limits when sampling.

BiF: There will be a lot going on at the festival. What are some of the “can’t miss” activities?

MA: The key activity of HOPTOMIC is the appreciation of the 65+ hop-forward beers and the sampling of small parings of food. The local restaurants and specialty markets have not principally paired the food with any one particular brew, but have focused on the essence of what hops add to beer; the aroma and bitterness. Some of the beers will be in shorter supply than others due to their very limited availability, so I might recommend starting one’s sampling with the brews that are least common to him or her.

BiF. Will this become an annual event, or is it a one-off?

MA: The consumer will be the one that will help us decide if HOPTOMIC has the legs to take stride in future years! Tampa’s STRAZ Center for the Performing Arts has asked us to help make HOPTOMIC an annual philanthropic event for them, as all net proceeds are being offered to them. We at J.J. Taylor are very excited to have created this not-for-profit event, and help bring further awareness to our local craft beer retailers and participating breweries. We are very optimistic for future HOPTOMIC endeavors.

BiF: Are there any discounted rates for attendees at downtown Tampa hotels?

MA: Yes, in fact we have $65 room rates for Saturday 6/18 at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, which is directly next door to the STRAZ center. (111 W. Fortune St., Tampa) When you call the Howard Johnson, 813-223-1351, remind them of the $65 room rate; it is booked under HOPTOMIC Beer Festival. It’s about a 60-second walk from the event – can’t get much better than that!

BiF: Anything else you would like to tell Beer in Florida readers about Hoptomic?

Beer Bites: Air-conditioning, IPAs and a German Beer … Garden?

I recently traveled to Cleveland for the Cleveland International Beer Fest and to check out some more of the region’s craft beer scene. There are a lot of similarities between Ohio’s and Florida’s beer communities, but in talking to an employee of the massive I-X Center, where the fest was held, I learned of one big difference.

“This is the last event here before the center closes for the summer,” he said.

I asked why.

“Because everything goes on outside until the fall,” he replied.

That’s quite the opposite of Florida, where we will try to seek shelter in air-conditioned comfort as much as possible for the next few months.

Theatrical Tasting

image courtesy of Tampa TheatreOne of the first places in Tampa to even HAVE air-conditioning will hold a beer festival on Saturday. The Brews Brothers festival will be from 8 to 10 p.m. (“Premium Tasting” ticket holders get in an hour earlier) at the historic Tampa Theatre on Franklin Street in downtown. I remember going to this theatre as a youngster, when it showed first-run movies, but had fallen into disrepair. You could buy plastic oranges with juice at the concession stand, but no beer. Lovingly restored by a nonprofit group since then, the 1926 beauty now hosts concerts, classic and indie films, and other cultural events. This is the theater’s first beer festival, and the website promises a small but impressive list of craft brews and food samples from local restaurants.

Bitter tastes

Over at the Dunedin Brewery, the taps will be flowing with IPAs from all over the country during its India Pale Ale Festival 2011 beginning at 7 p.m. The Fritz will provide the musical entertainment. If this is anything like the brewery’s Stogies and Stout Festival, expect an awesome time. If you don’t have tickets yet, click quickly. It’s expected to sell  out.

Down South

An ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store in Palm Bay is holding a craft beer tasting Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring more than brews from around the world. Cost of $10 includes a souvenir glass and a coupon for the night of the tasting.

Panhandle Prost!

I recently came across the website for Hofbräu Beer Garden in Panama City Beach. Looks like a pretty neat place, especially if you’re a fan of German brews. Though from the pictures, I’d say it’s more of a “beer hall” than a “beer garden” because it seems to be largely inside. But, heck, even The New York Times makes that mistake.

An Outsider’s View of Florida Beer

During another screwing around on the Internet research session, I came across the Boa Beer Blog, run by Mike Boa of Maryland. He has posted several stories of his Spring Break trip to Florida in which he hit some of our hot spots: Tampa Bay Brewing Co., Peg’s Cantina, Cigar City and Sarasota Brewing Co.
