Beer Bites: Flying Machines, Stein Hoisting and Double Geekery

Though the weather may be a bit rainy,  there are craft beer happenings out the wazoo* across Florida. In fact, this weekend would be a good time to have a cloning machine, but I lost the number for Phineas and Ferb.

And if you need an excuse, how about celebrating the five medals that Florida breweries brought back from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver last weekend?

*not to be confused with the annual WaZoo beer festival at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

 Tiger’s Den

Lagniappe Brewing Company, brewers of Effinheimer Beer,  in Minneola is throwing a Florida at LSU watch party Saturday from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Gator fans be warned; there will be complimentary jambalaya served, which may give you an inkling about which team the brewery favors. More information here.

Gonna Fly Now!

Red Bull Flugtag takes place Saturday on the downtown Tampa waterfront starting at 1 p.m. What is Flugtag you ask? It’s a competition where teams create some outlandish, human-powered flying machines and basically dump them into the water, hoping to be the one that “flies” the longest distance before splashdown. It looks like loads of fun, but here’s why you’re reading this. Following the event will be the Rock & Brew Fest, presented by Cigar City Brewing. Plenty of great local music and Cigar City beer will be there. Read more here.

Capital Fun

Brewfest Tallahassee, presented by the Sunrise Rotary, will be Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. Nearly 100 brews will be available for sampling, and VIP tickets are available. More here.

Oktoberfestivus

The big beer festival in Munich may have ended, but that doesn’t mean the spirit of Oktoberfest doesn’t live on, even here in Florida. What follows is a quick and likely incomplete list of upcoming events and festivals.

Speaking of Munich

How would you like to win a trip to next year’s Oktoberfest – the big one in Germany. If you can hoist a full 1-liter glass stein long enough, Samuel Adams will send you there. Try your luck at one of these upcoming events in Florida. Here are the details on the Sam Adams contest. By the way, the current leader is Jihad Nassar, who held the stein at arm’s length for an astounding 21 minutes anfd four seconds.

Brew On

The Funky Buddha Homebrew Store in Boca Raton will hold a homebrewing class on Sunday at 11 a.m. Cost is $20, but that includes a $10 off coupon to use in the store. For more information, email Tony at Tony@funkybuddhabrewery.com.

Spooky Cruise

If you haven’t made plans for Halloween night yet, here’s a chance to costume it up on the water while drinking some great beer. The Shipyard Emporium brew pub in Winter Park will hold a sunset cruise with Shipyard beers on board and a chance to try brewer Ron Raike’s “scariest seasonal beer yet.” Cost is $20. For more information or to make reservations, call Tom Pence at 407-383-9463.

A Good Reason to Drink

Hops for Hospice will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brighthouse Field in Clearwater. Proceeds will benefit The Suncoast Hospice Foundation.

Geeks, Meet Geeks

Get your beer and Star Wars geek on Saturday night during the Beer & Star Wars Lowbrow Art Extravaganza at Mr. Beery’s in Sarasota. More information here.

That’s it for this week’s Beer Bites. As always, if I missed something, please feel free to mention it in the comments section below. Now it’s time to get back to work on that cloning machine.

Reports: Cigar City Will Can Some of Its Beers

Cigar City Brewing photo by Gerard WalenThe Cigar City Brewing Facebook page has some interesting posts on it this morning.

From Cigar City: “Did you know? Cans are impenetrable to light, unlike bottles.”

Previous post from a liker: “Picked up the recent copy of Southern Brewing News and it said you guys plan to install a canning line in the new facility! If it’s true I’m super happy, and formally request a seasonal canning of the Table Saison. (Doubt that’s ever been done before).”

Southern Brewing News does not make its articles available online, and I do not have a subscription, but this news has been repeated on other sites such as BeerAdvocate.com. It is not known when the canning line will be operational, but the reports say that the first beers to be canned at the Tampa craft brewery will be Jai Alai IPA and Florida Cracker white ale.

Though some craft beer geeks look down their noses at beer in cans, Beer in Florida is a big supporter. Cans allow no potentially damaging light or oxygen to enter, they are more environmentally friendly and more easily recyclable, and some beaches allow alcohol, but not glass. Not to mention that cans are lighter and easier to pack when you’re taking a road trip out of state and want to share some Florida brew goodness with your friends.

Beer Festival Will Benefit Hospice

Image courtesy of Hops for HospiceThis one almost slipped by, but luckily I saw a mention of it on Facebook and found out more.

Luckily, I say, because this beer festival will help out a local branch of one of the most selfless organizations out there, and there are still tickets available.

The third annual Hops for Hospice Beer Festival will be Saturday, October 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater. More than 120 beers will be available for sampling. For an admission charge of $25 in advance (there’s a $1 service fee for ordering online) and $30 at the gate (if there any left), festival-goers will get a souvenir sampling mug and unlimited tastings.

Proceeds will benefit The Suncoast Hospice Foundation. Even if you’ve never needed to call on Hospice to help care for a loved one, chances are you know someone who has, so you know Hospice provides a valuable service to the community.

For more information, visit the Hops for Hospice website.

Florida Craft Breweries Earn Medals at Great American Beer Festival

Image courtesy of Great American Beer FestivalNote: An important update was made to this post after it was first published.

The medals competition at the Great American Beer Festival is over, and five Florida breweries each brought home a medal: two bronzes, two silvers and one gold.

Here are the Florida medalists, the beers and the categories:

  • Florida Beer Company, Melbourne: Florida Beer Florida Lager, bronze, (American-Style Amber Lager – 58 entries)
  • Big River Grille and Brewing, Lake Buena Vista: Rocket Red, bronze (American Style Amber/Red Ale – 82 entries). *
  • Tequesta Brewing Co., Tequesta: Bock in Bock, silver (Rye Beer – 36 entries).
  • Brewzzi, West Palm Beach: Cityfest, silver (Vienna-style lager – 32 entries).
  • Cigar City Brewing, Tampa: Minaret ESB, gold (Extra Special Bitter – 43 entries).

* The medal for Big River was left out in a previous version of this post. The GABF listed it as being entered from the brewery’s home office in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but it was brewed by Kent Waugh at the Florida location.

According to the Brewers Association, a total of 248 medals were awarded in the competition, and 526 breweries from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico entered 3,930 beer for judging, which included 86 Pro-Am competition entries. There were 83 style categories judged, plus the Pro-Am competition.

Also, JJ Taylor Distributing Florida Inc. of Tampa was honored with the Craft Beer Distributor Achievement Award in the Craft Beer Distributor of the Year competition.

Congratulations to the breweries bringing medals home to Florida.

Here’s a complete list of the winners.
