Drink Barleywine; Then Walk the Line

Big and bold barleywine staggers to the front of the stage this weekend during the Dunedin Brewers Guild’s 10th annual Walk the Line on Barleywine and Strong Ale Stumble.

A festival and tasting will be Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dunedin House of Beer, and a limited number of $30 tickets are available for that. Leading up to the festival will be commercial competition for brewpubs and commercial breweries Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and a homebrew competition Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The name is literal because … well, let the guild explain: “The tradition is that after the Fest we set up a very crooked path line in which participants raced against the clock and got points for accuracy to adhering to the path of line. Three sober judges time you and penalize you for “aberrations” 😉 Sounds easy, right? We thought so too, so we added a Dominatrix with a whip to motivate participants to go faster. History has shown that this works: times improved dramatically; however there were a few competitors who chose to do it on their knees, so they actually took longer… and sometimes these competitors even went backwards! Was it the Barleywine, or was it the Dominatrix?”

Sounds like fun, right? Right?

You can find all the details and buy tickets here.

For those of you unfamiliar with the barleywine style, here’s the description from Beeradvocate.com.

Despite its name, a Barleywine (or Barley Wine) is very much a beer, albeit a very strong and often intense beer! In fact, it’s one of the strongest of the beer styles. Lively and fruity, sometimes sweet, sometimes bittersweet, but always alcoholic. A brew of this strength and complexity can be a challenge to the palate. Expect anything from an amber to dark brown colored beer, with aromas ranging from intense fruits to intense hops. Body is typically thick, alcohol will definitely be perceived, and flavors can range from dominant fruits to palate smacking, resiny hops.

English varieties are quite different from the American efforts, what sets them apart is usually the American versions are insanely hopped to make for a more bitter and hop flavored brew, typically using American high alpha oil hops. English versions tend to be more rounded and balanced between malt and hops, with a slightly lower alcohol content, though this is not always the case.

Most Barleywines can be cellared for years and typically age like wine.

While we’re on the subject of walking the line …

Into Every Wasteland, Some Beer Must Fall

Cooler at World of Beer Sarasota

UPDATE #2: A search of the Web site for Weingarten Realty, owners of the Clermont Landing property, reveals a site map that has World of Beer in one of the retail spaces. I’ll drive by there tomorrow to see if there are any signs up or any construction action going down. Still have not received a reply from WoB headquarters.

UPDATE: A World of Beer – Clermont Facebook page has been created. It’s only a place holder for now, but does confirm the address and is formatted similarly to other WoB Facebook pages, indicating that it is genuine.

I still haven’t received a response to my inquiry seeking more details from the World of Beer corporate office, but I will update this post if I do.

(Original post) Living so close to Disney World, I’m constantly reminded that sometimes wishes come true.

In perusing a business column in the Orlando Sentinel today, I came across this little tidbit down in the copy that could mean one of my wishes may be coming true.

“World of Beer leased 2,209 square feet of retail space in Clermont Landing.”

I live in Clermont, and often lament to other Florida beer geeks that it’s still as much of a craft beer wasteland as the entire state used to be. Sure, there’s a decent tap here and there, and a couple of liquor stores have some craft beer on the shelves, but finding a wide selection requires a road trip into Orlando or Tampa. I’ve often wished that my little city would become home to a nice craft beer bar.

The Clermont Landing shopping center is only about 10 minutes from my house, and World of Beer bars boast a few dozen taps and hundreds of bottles.

World of Beer is the chain of craft beer bars that started in Tampa in 2007 and now has nearly 20 stores across the state and beyond – new WoB franchises recently opened in Arlington, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio

Clermont is not listed in the “Coming Soon” section of the WoB website, but I’ve sent an email to the corporate office seeking clarification. There are four pubs scheduled to open in Florida next year – Altamonte Springs, Pensacola and two in Miami – and four more coming to other states: Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Savannah, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Columbia, South Carolina.

Clermont Landing currently has a movie theater, retail stores and several restaurants, and it’s on heavily traveled U.S. 27, just south of Highway 50. Clermont itself is in South Lake County, about 30 minutes from Disney World and a just a little more than that from downtown Orlando.

If I get more information, it will be shared here.

Tampa’s Mermaid Tavern Serves Craft Beer with a Nod to Old Florida

The recently opened Mermaid Tavern in Tampa’s Seminole Height’s neighborhood was profiled by Kathy Steele of the Tampa Tribune.

The description of its 20 taps of craft beer and another 10 so in bottles whets my thirst for a visit to what co-owner Becky Flanders described as “a dump” and “a dive bar” before she and business partner Lux DeVoid purchased the property and restored it.

But here’s the part of the story that really spoke to this old Floridian’s heart: The name, decorations and style give a nod to the Weeki Wachee mermaids, old Florida and the state’s insatiable appetite for kitsch.”

The bar features a lot of Florida-brewed beer – including Cigar City, Tampa Bay Brewing Co., Dunedin Brewery, Cold Storage Craft Brewery and Saint Somewhere – as well as an assortment of wines.

Sounds like a place where the mermaids would drink.

Get ‘Mow Beer’ for Less Moolah During Party at Barley Mow Brewing Co.

Join the folks at Barley Mow Brewing Company and Songbird Agency on Saturday night for a “Mow Beer Please!” party at the new craft brewery in Largo.

With a little social media action, you can save money on pints and earn chances to win some cool goodies.

Here’s the info from the BMBC Facebook page:

Songbird Agency would like to extend a big “welcome to the neighborhood” to Largo’s newest brewery, Barley Mow Brewing Company! They opened their doors to the public on November 8th and are proudly serving all American craft beers, including many born right here in Florida. They also have a fine selection of wines and spirits.

The environment is friendly and inviting. The folks at BMBC love beer and want everyone who steps through their doors to leave with the same passion. So bring a group of craft beer aficionados and your beer-curious bud with you. We’ll have a great time talking about and drinking beer!

And because Songbird likes to go big or go home, we’ll set up a $100 tab. Everyone who comes in after 8pm on 11/26/11 only needs to say “mow beer please” to the bartender and they’ll get $2 off every beer on tap until the tab runs out (one serving at a time). So don’t show up late!

We’ll also have some small local goodies to give away from local-based businesses. So make sure you get your raffle ticket with each beer purchase. We’ll announce the winners at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00, but you do need to be present to win.

For extra raffle tickets, tweet about this event and mention @songbirdagency and use the hashtag #mowbeer from now until the event. Don’t forget to include a shortlink to this event invitation. Limit one extra ticket per day per tweet. Get another raffle ticket when you “check-in” on Facebook and/or Foursquare and show the bartender or a Songbird rep.

See you all there!
