Cigar City Brewing will brew beer to support Tampa radio station

Cigar City Brewing photo by Gerard WalenCigar City Brewing has joined with Tampa’s WMNF 88.5 FM as a sponsor of the listener-supported radio station’s 31st annual Tropical Heatwave fundraiser, and Cigar City is brewing a special beer to commemorate it, according to a news release from the station.

Brewery owner and founder Joey Redner describes the “Tropical Heatwave” beer as a “hoppy” American wheat ale.

“We are featuring a specialty hop from New Zealand called ‘Kohatu’ which features light pine notes and a lot of tropical fruit aromas,” Redner said. “It will be a great beer for a either a literal or a musical heat wave.”

The popular fundraiser features a variety of eclectic music and performers each year. This year’s acts include Chuck Prophet and Mission Express, The Bright Light Social Hour and a “Beach Goth” act from California with a name any craft beer fan would appreciate: The Growlers.

The concert will be Saturday, May 12, 2012, at various venues  in Ybor City, but the Tropical Heatwave beer will debut Tuesday, March 13, during WMNF Day at Whole Foods Tampa, 1548 N. Dale Mabry Highway.  Whole Foods Tampa is also a Tropical Heatwave sponsor, along with Creative Loafing.d

The beer will be available at Tampa Bay area stores, and of course at the concert.

“I am happy that local music can be enjoyed with local beer,” said Cigar City Vice President Justin Clark. “Consumers’ ears and taste buds will be rewarded.”

Disney and beer: Finding a good brew at Walt Disney World just got a lot easier

“I’m planning a trip to Walt Disney World. Where can I find good craft beer at Disney?”

Image courtesy of beersandears.comThat is one of the most frequently asked questions sent to Beer in Florida, and I usually respond with a few suggestions of stores and bars in the area, as well as a handful of on-property sites that I know serve some craft beer along with the standard macrobrews.

But I just came across an iPhone app that will make answering questions about Disney and beer a lot easier: Beers and Ears Walt Disney World Beer List.

This easy-to-use  app makes finding beer on Disney World property a breeze, and just a few minutes of playing with it educated me on the wide variety of craft beers available there.

For instance, did you know that the Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot’s World Showcase serves several Unibroue beers? It’s in the Canada pavilion, naturally. In the mood for a Young’s Double Chocolate Stout? Pop in to Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant at Downtown Disney. Thirsty for Terrapin Rye Pale Ale? The ESPN Club at the Boardwalk Resort has it.

Raglan Road and the ESPN Club both boast impressive beer lists, at least for a theme park property, and the ESPN Club  is handily just a few doors down from Big River Grille and Brewing, the only brew pub on Disney property and a bronze medal winner at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival for brewer Kent Waugh’s Rocket Red ale.

The iPhone app has a list of beers that you can scroll through. Tap on the beer, and a window comes up with where it is served. Tap on the venue, and it pulls up a list of all the brews being served there. There is also a map with handy “beer mug” pins to find the closest beer.

Locally brewed beers include offerings from Orlando Brewing and Lagniappe Brewing (Effinheimer), and at Raglan Road and the Cabana Bar and Beach Club at the Dolphin Resort you can even buy a Cigar City Jai-Alai IPA to quench your thirst after a long day at the parks.

Beers and Ears has a website as well, and you can learn more about the app there.

I go to Disney World fairly frequently (after all, I’m married to Theme Park Mom) and I’m looking forward to giving the Beers and Ears app a test run next time.

Oh, and the best part? It’s free.

If you download it and use it, or if you have used it, share your thoughts below in the comments.

Here’s an interview with the app’s developer.

Green Flash arriving soon in Florida

Big news for Florida hopheads and lovers of finely crafted beer. Green Flash Brewing is coming here.

The award-winning San Diego craft brewery is well-known for its hops-forward brews, especially those in the California IPA style, though it produces stouts, Belgian-styles, barleywines and others.

Pepin Distributing Co. in Tampa is listed as the Florida distributor on the Green Flash website, and the Pepin Facebook page confirms that the beer is coming to the Sunshine State.

An official roll-out party is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2012, at Pour House Tampa, which is tagging the event as “California Beer Night,” so expect some other tasty West Coast beers on tap.

The brewery, by the way, is named after an optical phenomenon that sometimes briefly flashes from the setting sun. The Florida West Coast is no stranger to the green flash; how nice that we’ll soon be able to drink a Green Flash while waiting to see one.
