Sweetwater Brewing rolling into Orlando and Tampa Bay areas

Image courtesy of Sweetwater Brewing CompanyI’ve been a fan of Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewing Company ever since I first tasted their beers a few years ago on a road trip to Georgia. When the brewery announced it was moving into Florida a while back, I was at first excited, then disappointed when I learned the beer would only be available in the northern part of the state, but not in the Orlando area, where I lived at the time.

But today, Sweetwater Brewing announced that with the production boost from a recent brewhouse expansion,  its brews will soon be available in Orlando and the Tampa Bay area, starting with 420 Extra Pale Ale in late October as the first phase of the rollout.

A distributing partnership has not been announced for either metro area.

Here’s the news release:

SweetWater Brewing Company announces 2012 Florida Expansion

The South’s second largest craft brewery rolling into Tampa and Orlando this fall

ATLANTA (August 21, 2012) – SweetWater Brewing Company is excited to announce their expansion into Tampa and Orlando this fall. Known for their West Coast style of hoppy, aggressive, incredibly fresh and unpasteurized ales, SweetWater will be kicking off their arrival with their flagship beer – 420 Extra Pale Ale – on draft at select bars, pubs and restaurants throughout the area.

The brewery’s iconic rainbow trout tap handles will begin appearing in Tampa late this October and then make their way into Orlando in late November, but no decisions have been made yet on distribution partners in either market. Following its launch of 420 on draft, SweetWater will roll out more tasty brews from its award-winning lineup including IPA and Blue to join 420 in six-packs.

“With the installation of our new 250-barrel brew house and the addition of a slew of fermentation tanks, we will finally be able to make enough beer so that we can sell it a little further south into Florida,” said Freddy Bensch, founder and Big Kahuna of SweetWater Brewing Company. “I’m personally looking forward to getting down there to see if the fishing is as good as I’ve heard!”

More details to be released closer to the brew’s arrival in market. To learn more about SweetWater Brewing Company and its annual lineup, visit www.sweetwaterbrew.com.

World Beer Festivals will hit the road to St. Petersburg

For more than 20 years, World Beer Festivals, produced by All About Beer Magazine, have brought the products of international, national and local breweries to the masses, and have benefited local organizations at the same time.  In fact, the stated mission is “to expose communities to a wide range of beers and to brewers, along with educational opportunities, to increase their appreciation of beer,” according to its website.

But until now, beer lovers have had to travel to communities such as Durham or Raleigh in North Carolina – or Columbia, South Carolina – to partake in the festivals.

Beer in Florida is proud to be among the first to announce that World Beer Festivals is bringing the show to St. Petersburg in September, and I’m even more thrilled to say that I’ll be doing a presentation during both sessions of the festival.

Here is the just released announcement:

All About Beer Magazine’s World Beer Festival produced by Three Zebras Entertainment is proud to announce it is coming to St. Petersburg Coliseum in St. Petersburg, Florida for the very first time on Saturday, September 22, 2012!

The World Beer Festival is a celebration of the beer culture. It offers festival goers the ability to taste and sample craft and specialty beers from local, regional, national & global breweries and to also have the opportunity to discuss the beer with brewers and knowledgeable servers.

Festival goers will get to experience the Art of Beer Education Area where they will be able to enjoy beer seminars & exhibit s from nationally recognized beer authors & experts on how to brew beer, food & beer, beer history & other beer education sessions.

We are very excited to announce Gerard Walen, founder and owner of beerinflorida.com and editor of roadtripsforbeer.com will be one of our guest speakers. “I am excited that the World Beer Festival is bringing their event to St. Petersburg, Florida, I am especially eager to be a part of it and helping to spread the word about Florida’s craft beer scene” says Gerard Walen.

Festival goers will also enjoy live music from local musicians while tasting many of the newest and the best beers

The festival will take place at the historic St. Petersburg Coliseum downtown, 535 Fourth Ave. N., St. Petersburg.  Tickets start at $40 for each session, in advance. You can find more information here.

The secret’s out: Crystal River’s new nanobrewery is open

ser·en·dip·i·ty

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenA stroke of serendipity led me to the discovery of Florida’s newest craft brewery.

For various reasons, I’m temporarily living in the Crystal River area, and I discovered through a mention in a Google news feed that a nanobrewery recently opened just a few miles from where I’m staying.

Fran and Donna Copp opened Copp Winery about seven years ago in a restored mid-1960s Florida bungalow in Crystal River, but then Fran, a longtime homebrewer, got the itch to start a brewery in the space as well.

“She was having so much fun working 90 hours a week,” he said, “I said, ‘Hey, I might as well join.’”

Fran, a calculus teacher and a self-proclaimed lover of gadgets, did all the carpentry and other remodeling work himself, including custom-building the one-barrel brewing system.

Copp Brewery opened a little more than a month ago, but because there are still some finishing touches to be made in the tasting room, Fran has been relying on word-of-mouth to spread the news.

And because the brewery is so new and the production capacity is limited, he hasn’t decided on which of his brews will be featured regularly on the nine taps in the tasting room, other than the refreshing True Grit, a Pale Ale brewed with almost 30 pounds of corn grits per barrel.

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenVisitors can expect new beers pretty much on every visit.  On my initial visit, he had a fantastic Black Pepper Porter on tap (Sorry folks, I kicked the keg, but it was so popular that it will likely make a return visit).

A few bar-type snacks with a twist are available. For instance, you can usually order a soft pretzel with homemade mustard for dipping. Unfortunately, they were out of the mustard when I visited, but I’m looking forward to trying it.

Copp Brewery is at 11 NE 4th Avenue, Crystal River, Florida 34429.

It’s closed Monday and Tuesday, open from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Oh, and I’ve heard the July 4th Fireworks Party is a blast (pun intended).

Fran was kind enough to give me a tour and talk about the brewery. Here’s the video.

Frank & Steins: Downtown Orlando’s craft beer hotspot.

Florida has some nifty craft beer spots that I keep on my radar in case I find myself in the area.

Frank & Steins in downtown Orlando was one of those, and I was able to make a lunchtime visit the other day.  It did not disappoint.

Opened nearly a year ago in spacious quarters at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Church Street, Frank & Steins boasts a list of more than 300 craft beers, along with wine, cold sake and food. And unlike some other establishments that advertise extensive beer offerings, its list is not “padded out” with beer from the Big Three macrobrewers. There are some mass-distributed imports, such as Heineken, Newcastle and Stella Artois, but the vast majority are made by U.S.  and international craft brewers, including some from Florida.

Beer geeks will find plenty to choose from, and the bartenders and servers know their beer.

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard Walen“All of our staff are Cicerone Certified Beer Servers,” said Sabrina Resendes, the day manager. “Everyone here knows about the beers and can suggest some good stuff for you.”

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WaelenThe food menu includes typical pub fare, flatbreads, sandwiches and salads, but the “Signature Franks” are the specialty.  I ordered the French Dip Frank: “1/4 lb. beef frank wrapped in prime roast beef with melted provolone, and our house-made horseradish mayo on a toasted hoagie, served with a side of au jus for dipping.”

Yeah, it was awesome.

Giving the place even more beer cred, each frank comes with a suggested beer pairing. I drank something else, but the menu suggested a Lost Coast Downtown Brown to accompany my frank.

Resendes points out that Frank & Steins is not typical of the nearby clubs in downtown Orlando that cater to the party scene, and sometimes have velvet ropes and doormen weeding out who comes in.

“We try to take care of all age ranges,” she says. “We want to appeal to everybody when it comes to what we offer with our beers and our sports and our games, the atmosphere, our music, our food. We want everybody to come in here and sit down and have a good time.”

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenBut neither is Frank & Steins a dark and cozy pub.  Big plate glass windows bring in the outside light, there are plenty of tables, and it’s a sports geek’s dream, with 30 wide-screen TVs tuned to various events.  Skee-ball , bar shuffleboard and other games are tucked away in the edges, and there is a big shelf full of board games that customers can use.  There is no cover charge.

It is a welcoming place. The staff is friendly and helpful, and it truly is family-friendly – I watched several toddlers and stroller babies come through the door with their families during the time I was there.

But it’s also a place where many a macro drinker has been introduced to more flavorful brews.

“We’re always trying to get people who don’t like to go outside the norm,” Resendes said.  “Come into Frank & Steins, let us suggest a beer, and see if we can’t get you drinking something a little better.”

Frank & Steins will celebrate its first anniversary with a block party on Saturday, June 23, 2012, starting at 5 p.m. There will be live music and a DJ, three craft beer tents, a full liquor bar and plenty of food.
