Cigar City Brewing to open a brewpub in Tampa (Updated)

Cigar City Brewery in Tampa just announced to the world a new venture: a Cigar City Brewpub on North Dale Mabry Highway.

The Tampa craft brewer has released few details other than the address and  a new Facebook page for the brewpub. According to a post at BeerStreetJournal.com, the new restaurant/brewery will have on onsite brewing system and is scheduled to open in January 2013. (See Update below)

A Google search reveals that the physical address, 15491 N. Dale Mabry Highway, is a former TGI Friday’s restaurant.

The Cigar City Brewpub operating in Airside C at Tampa International Airport serves food, but the tasting room at the main brewery is not licensed to serve food on-site, though it frequently hosts local food trucks.

UPDATE: A Tampa Bay Times story unveiled a few new details about the planned Cigar City Brewpub.

The highlights:

  • The brewpub is expected to open in late February 2013.
  • The menu is being designed and will focus on Tampa Cuban cuisine.
  • The onsite brewery will produce beer 100 gallons at a time. (My calculations put that at a little more than 2 barrels).

You can read the complete story here.

Cigar City Brewing sets date for Hunahpu’s Day 2013

One of the most anticipated beer releases from a Florida brewery will happen March 9, 2013, when Tampa’s Cigar City Brewery releases its coveted Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout. The brewery has set up a bare-bones web page for the event; details will be added as the date nears.

Demand for this award-winning imperial stout aged on cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans, Ancho chilis, Pasilla chilis and cinnamon grows each year. About 5,000 folks streamed through the gates during last year’s release, and the bottle limit had to be reduced from three to two per person to meet demand. (For reference, the limit in 2011 was four bottles).

Here are some posts from previous years that will tell you more about the event:

St. Petersburg’s World Beer Festival enters the Florida craft beer community

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenThere’s a new player in the Florida beer festival scene, and its organizers say they hope it will be a long and fruitful relationship.

The World Beer Festival – St. Petersburg took place Saturday, September 22, in the Historic Coliseum in downtown St. Petersburg, sponsored by All About Beer Magazine and World Beer Festivals. This was the first time they put on a festival outside of the Carolinas, and it rocked.

More than 60 sampling booths were set up in the space – some pouring beers from more than one brewery – food was available for purchase, and an area was set up on the stage for folks to hear educational presentations from locally based beer personalities, tastings included.

Lots of beer and short lines.

I was honored to lead off the presentations with a talk titled “Why Did They Name It THAT?” during which I spoke about the Florida-based stories that inspired some of the local beer names.  (I’m thinking about turning the presentation into a series of posts.)

Sean Nordquist, beer writer and the brain behind Beer for the Daddy, gave a fascinating talk on “A History of Beer in Florida.” One brewery rep told me as an aside that he learned more about the state’s beer history by listening to Sean than he had in his previous 20 years in the beer business in Florida. You can read the text of Sean’s speech here.

Expert orator Danny Reid, the founder and president of South Tampa homebrewers club Special Hoperations, finished up the talks with a presentation about yeast, “How Something So Small Makes Something So Big.” Danny veered off the beer wagon by also offering samples of mead and cider for the audience, and talking about the similarities and differences among the three fermented beverages.

A VIP area was set up in the balcony with food and beverages not available on the floor, but the impressive beer list meant that there were plenty of fantastic brews – many of them local – for folks to sample no matter which level of ticket purchased. Brewers and brewery reps were on hand, and even the volunteers – some of them local homebrewers – were more knowledgeable than you sometimes find at a festival.

Though the final ticket count has not yet been calculated, tickets were limited to 1,500. By my rough estimation, about half of that ticket limit was reached. Lines were nearly nonexistent and the layout was ideal. Even if all the tickets had been sold, the venue would not have felt crowded.

Chris Rice, vice president of All About Beer Magazine, says that was just fine.

“We knew it would be hard to sell all the tickets, having just announced it in the middle of summer,” he says. “But we were prepared for 1,500 and bought enough beer that if we had a rush, we would not have run out.”

Plenty of room.

Next year – and they promise there will be a next year – there will be much more time to get the word out.

If you missed this one, of course there’s always the one a year from now. But the World Beer Festivals aren’t done with Florida yet this year.

There is one scheduled for November 10 at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland, and another set for November 17 at the Germain Arena in Estero (between Fort Myers and Naples). The beer and food lists are being finalized, but tickets are now available. Stay tuned.

The St. Petersburg World Beer Festival helped benefit Albert Whitted Airport Preservation Society, which is dedicated to preserving and enhancing Albert Whitted Airport, one of our nation’s most historic aviation facilities.

Catching up on Florida Craft Beer

I have been behind on posting, so here are a few quick updates on the Florida craft beer scene.

  • The long-awaited opening of Rapp Brewing Company in Pinellas Park will happen this Saturday, Sept. 1, from 3 to 9 p.m. It will be a soft opening, and there will be guest taps from other local Florida breweries flowing, but the Rapp creations won’t be on tap until mid- to late September. Owner and Brewmaster Greg Rapp told me that the tasting room will be open Thursday to Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. at first, but he plans a grand opening celebration in late October and there may be extended hours after that. Here’s an interview with Greg from earlier this year, and a video tour of the brewery during the construction phase.
  • Cigar City Brewing has announced a HUGE expansion of its tasting room. More details here. Also, the tasting room recently tapped its Tony Jannus Pale Ale, previously available only at its new Tampa International Airport brewery and pub, which I had a chance to visit recently. Here are some photos.
  • World of Beer – Clermont opened this month. We first reported it here when they signed the lease. Unfortunately, I moved from Clermont a few days before it opened, but I did get a chance to visit and talk to General Manager Paul Darnell. It was a casual drop-in, though, so I don’t have an official interview, but he is doing a bang-up job with the social media aspect of it. It’s a much welcome oasis in what was a craft-beer desert part of Florida.
  • I had a chance to pop into Big Storm Brewing Co., the newly opened craft brewery in Odessa. I wasn’t able to stay long, but I highly recommend their flagship Wavemaker Amber Ale.  Big Storm just launched its website as well. You can find it here.
  • Don’t forget to buy your tickets for the World Beer Festival in at St. Petersburg’s Historic Coliseum. I’ll be doing a presentation there, as will Sean Nordquist from Beer for the Daddy and Danny Reid from the Special Hoperations homebrew club.
