Florida beer weeks return in 2013

image courtesy of South Florida Beer WeekThe year 2013 promises even more craft beer for thirsty Florida beer geeks. New breweries are scheduled to come online, more festivals will be announced, but one of the best parts is the continuance of a trend that started last year in the Sunshine State: Beer Weeks.

These celebrations of an area’s vibrant craft beer community begin Saturday, January 26, in South Florida. Here’s the text of the email that organizers sent to Beer in Florida.

That’s right – it’s back!

The Second Annual South Florida Beer Week is coming, bringing with it a plethora of local beer events from Jupiter to Miami. This week of festivities will kick off on Saturday, January, 19 and will culminate with the Jupiter Craft Brewers’ Festival on Saturday, January 26.

Unlike other beer weeks, South Florida Beer Week will focus solely on breweries founded right here in sunny Florida — breweries such as Cigar City, Native, Tequesta, Due South, Holy Mackerel, and Inlet. In addition, SFBW will feature exciting premier tappings from up-and-coming breweries like Oakland Park’s Funky Buddha, as well as limited beers from Florida breweries that do not regularly distribute in Palm Beach, Broward, or Dade counties including 7eventh Sun, Green Room, Mile Marker, and more.

“The inaugural South Florida Beer Week this past January was a huge hit,” says Adam Fine, General Manager for Brown Distributing Company’s Specialty Division, South. “But for 2013, we plan to hold an even more exciting lineup of events, from pub crawls to brewery tours. Each of these events will be themed around one thing: promoting great local beer from the State of Florida.”

These fantastic local brews will be on display at a multitude of events including beer pairing dinners at award winning restaurants, tap takeovers at bars such as Tap 42 and Laser Wolf, a pub crawl for charity in downtown Hollywood, and a brewery bus tour that will stop at four of South Florida’s most exciting breweries. South Florida’s craft beer fans will also get the opportunity to learn more about beer at educational classes and tastings at participating Total Wine and Whole Foods locations.

A complete list of events – as well as a regularly updated blog with interviews, news, and more – is available at southfloridabeerweek.com.

Here are dates and links for some of the others.

If any more are announced during the year, I’ll make sure the details are posted on this site.

Apocalypse parties and Florida craft beer

beer in florida

Will the Mayan Apocalypse come about on Friday, December 21?

Some folks believe it will; most don’t. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a few tasty craft beers, just in case, and a few more the next day if we survive.

Following is a list of various Florida craft beer venues that are hosting pre- and post-Apocalypse ceremonies. If you know of more, please leave a comment with a link to an information page.

Good luck to us all.

For a Final Toast:  Friday, December 21

  • Jacksonville’s Green Room Brewery will hold the Quetzalcoatl  Release, End of the World Party beginning at 4 p.m.  It marks the release of the Mayan-themed Quetzalcoatl, described as “Brewed with a massive amount of malt this Imperial Mayan Red utilized Cassava Root in the mash, Poblano and Serrano peppers in the boil, and conditioned on Chocolate and Vanilla.” Live music from Firewater Tent Revival and food trucks.
  • An End of the World Party will start at 6 p.m. at Vine & Barley Palm City. Description: “The end of the world is upon us. The “Apocalypse” as the Greeks called it aka “lifting of the veil”, is nigh! The Mayans have predicted our end for some time now. Whether that means we all burn up in a fire storm or we just vibrate at higher frequency and evolve into a more advanced race … who knows? So grab your machetes, survival gear and come on out to Vine and Barley Palm City for a whole day of giveaways, fun and celebrate the End of it all! At 6pm there will be special releases from Cigar City and Florida Beer Company along with a special FBC firkin!”
  • Peg’s Cantina & Brew Pub in Gulfport will mark the potential end of the world with its release of RareR DOS, a barrel-aged imperial stout that scored a perfect 100 rating at BeerAdvocate.com. The Apocalypse Party starts at noon.
  • BX Beer Depot in Palm Springs will be the place to hoist a pint of Unibroue La Fin du Monde before the world ends at its Zut Non! La Fin Du Monde! End of the World Party! Here’s what to expect: “12-21-12. The planets align, we raise our glasses, and the world promptly ends! Prepare yourself for the end with the BX by raising a glass of Unibroue La Fin Du Monde in a toast to the end of the world. Where better to spend your last day than in at the BX with some of the best beer in Florida? If that isn’t enough, don’t forget that we will be hosting BOMB’s Pub Night (Brotherhood of Mustaches and Beards). There will be 50/50 raffles, schwag prizes, and a beard contest. Beer tastes better with a beard, so bring your amazing facial hair to the BX for a great night!” Festivities run from 7 to 11 p.m.
  • Burkes of Ireland in Crystal River will let you “Party Like a Crazy Mayan” at its Mayan End of the World Party from 7 p.m.  to closing. For $2 a spin, attendees can spin the Wheel of Destiny for “feats of courage and prizes.”  Those proceeds go to charity. Expect special beers on tap such as Great Divide’s Oak Aged Yeti.
  • Pensacola Bay Brewery is hosting its End of the World Blowout!!! (yes, that’s three exclamation points!!!) beginning at 8 p.m. As they say on the event’s Facebook page, “There is no better way to face impending doom than with good friends, great beer, and face meltingly awesome music!!!!” (Four!!!)

For the Survivors, Saturday, Dec. 22

  • Apocalypse Survivors Gathering will be held at Rapp Brewing Co. in Pinellas Park from 4 to 8 p.m.   Here’s what they say about it: “Join us and fellow survivors to celebrate a new beginning, or if nothing happens … just to get together and have a beer! Beer specials and probably some food – need to get rid of that doomsday stockpile.”
  • Mayan Schmayans will take place at 8 p.m. at the Cock & Bull in Sarasota. The Facebook page confidently states, “The world ain’t ending and neither is the great music, delicious beers and good times! Come out and celebrate. Doors open @ 8:00 p.m. $5 21 & up; $7 20 & under. Special Performances by: Seven Years Past, A Gentlemen Army and Sugar Phix.”
  • “Vierge” Day!  at Saint Somewhere Brewing Co.  in Tarpon Springs is always a blast during their “Occupy” events and a great place to celebrate the end of the word not happening.  Here’s what to look forward to:  “Celebrating the time, last year, when the keg of “Vierge” lasted longer than we thought it should have. You got a better reason to celebrate? I didn’t think so. We have an assortment of Vierge kegs from last year along with a few Vierge “Reloads”. Maybe a food truck. If you survive the end of the Mayan calendar the day before, this gives you cause to celebrate “Vierge”! As with all our events, bring a nice dusty bottle from your cellar to share! Vierge Day is $10 and gets you one of our NEW Saint Somewhere glasses along with three tickets for 10 oz. each of our Farmhouse ales with the tour.” According to the Facebook page, festivities start at 6 p.m.  and end at … 5 a.m.? That must’ve been a helluva party last year.

But, of course, all times are dependent on whether the Mayan Apocalypse actually happens.

December marks the official introduction of the brewery’s flagship brands to  the Orlando market, and as when the beer was debuted in Tampa, SweetWater founder Freddy Bensch and his posse will be leading visits to a couple of craft-beer destinations in the region.

UPDATE: SweetWater has released the schedule for the visit to Central Florida.

  • Weds. 12/12 from 6-7 p.m. – TAPS in Winter Park (480 N Orlando Ave.)

ATLANTA (November 30, 2012) – Kicking off the first week of December, Orlando locals will officially be able to get their hands on SweetWater Brewery’s lip-smackin’ lineup of ales. This launch, on the heels of the brewery’s recent introduction in the Tampa Bay area, adds to its Florida distribution footprint currently covering the panhandle, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Gainesville.

“We are pleased to announce that SweetWater Brewing Company has assigned City Beverages and Wayne Densch, Inc. as our Wholesaler partners for the Orlando/Sanford markets,” said Dave Guender, Director of Sales with SweetWater Brewing Company. “The personalized approach to servicing their markets, combined with our vision of growing our entire portfolio and the SweetWater brand overall, were key components of our decision. We feel we have an outstanding opportunity of impacting the craft culture within these two organizations, and being a part of the local craft beer movement in a way that will benefit all of us for the long term.”

SweetWater is bringing “the beers you’ve been training for” to thirsty locals starting with 420 Extra Pale Ale on draft at bars and restaurants, alongside of six packs of SweetWater bottles in the grocery stores, package stores, and specialty bottle shops to include the following brands:

  • 420 Extra Pale Ale – SweetWater’s 420 Extra Pale Ale is a West Coast style pale ale with big hops and a crisp finish. First brewed on April 20, 1997, this beer has developed quite the following in the Southeast. 420 is extremely well-balanced which makes it a perfect introduction to a new town…that’s why we say “drink ‘em if you got ‘em!”
  • SweetWater Blue – SweetWater Blue is a unique, lighter-bodied wheat ale enhanced with a hint of fresh blueberries. This brew’ll give folks a good whiff of a blueberry influence, with a subtle taste and an extra clean finish. This ain’t no fruit beer, but it is our breakfast beer, and perfect for hanging outside in the Florida heat.
  • SweetWater IPA – This mammoth India Pale Ale (IPA) is dry-hopped to the gills delivering a kick-you-in-the-teeth hop chop. The brew is unfiltered and, like all of our beers, always unpasteurized to leave all the natural flavors intact. SweetWater IPA recently won first place in a blind tasting against 15 of the best IPA’s in the country held by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Get in on the action! A crew from SweetWater Brewery, along with its Founder and Big Kahuna Freddy Bensch, will be flooding the market with sampling celebrations and sponsored festivities the week of Dec. 10. Stay connected to SweetWater’s Florida Facebook page at facebook.com/SWHeadyPeddlersFlorida for announcements on events, locations and more details.

Online fans can wet their whistles too by following the Florida Facebook page for details on how to enter SweetWater’s “Catch a Trout Tap” contest. The challenge rewards the first 20 folks to spot, capture and post photos of the brewery’s iconic trout tap handles around town with SweetWater Schwag.
