Tampa Bay Brewing Company plans new operation in Pinellas County

TBBCO logoThe fact that Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Ybor City has wanted to expand to Pinellas County has been one of the worst-kept secrets in the Tampa Bay area craft beer scene during the past year or so.

A story Tuesday on tampabay.com, the website for the Tampa Bay Times, finally confirmed it after a public meeting seeking a zoning variance from the county for the enterprise.

According to the story by Times staff writer Piper Castillo:

  • The Doble family, owners of TBBC, are purchasing a 23,500-square-foot brewery at 133 Candy Lane in Ozona, just few miles north of Dunedin, for $1.04 million.
  • The building, which borders the Pinellas Trail, will have a 15,000-square-foot production area, including six fermenting tanks, two brite tanks, and a 5,000-square-foot packaging area, as well as a tasting room.
  • The sale is expected to close November 7. In the article, the reporter quotes David Doble as saying that they will start construction the next day.

Doble confirmed that for Beer in Florida, but a post he wrote on the Tampa Bay Brewing Company Facebook page Wednesday emphasized that it’s still not a done deal.

So there may still be a few more bureaucratic hurdles to jump before the Pinellas County project can get off the ground.

“At this point, the appeal period is over October 3rd or 4th,” Doble said in a phone interview. “If an appeal is filed, you’re talking about months more.”

There are also the federal, state and local brewing and business permits to be acquired. But Doble remains optimistic. The brewing system has been ordered, and the engineering studies have begun.

“We are in the first stages of this,” he said.

New Florida craft brewery: Bugnutty Brewing Company

IMG_2489The title of “Florida’s Newest Brewery” tends to be passed along at a fairly rapid pace these days, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to visit the current titleholder while I was in the area.

Bugnutty Brewing Company held its official grand opening in Merritt Island on Friday, becoming the fifth brewery or brewpub in Florida’s Space Coast region, joining Florida Beer Company (soon opening its new facility in Cape Canaveral), Cocoa Beach Brewing Company in Cocoa Beach, and Charlie & Jake’s and Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne. Intracoastal held a soft opening just a few weeks before Bugnutty opened its taps.

Three friends – Michael, Shawn and Jon – are the brainpower behind Bugnutty. All three are involved in the brewing. Michael works at nearby NASA; Shawn is retired from the Air Force, where he worked on jets and rockets; and Jon is a former brewer at nearby Cocoa Beach Brewing Company.

Currently, Bugnutty brews on a 2-barrel brewhouse, and five of their beers were on tap during my visit on Saturday: Suzi’s Red Belly Ale, Zeus Will Smite Thee IPA, Mike’s Milk Stout, Sticky Foot Pale Ale, and Red, Wheat and Blue. The last was my favorite, though I’m usually not a big fan of fruit beers. But the blueberry, though noticeable, was really balanced with the rest of the ingredients. All of the beers were well made and tasted great.

They also had nearly a dozen guest taps, most from other Florida breweries, and there were a handful of empty taps that Michael said would soon be filled with other beers brewed on the premises. Plans call for distribution off premises.

Tucked into an oddly shaped corner unit of a shopping plaza, Bugnutty takes full advantage of its space, with a 90-degree angled bar on one side, table and chairs along the windows, and a “nook” to the side set up with two dart boards. There were two wide-screen TVs high on the deep-red walls behind the bar. Shawn said there will be more soon, to take advantage of the sports packages on their satellite TV system.

Folks living nearby had been waiting for the brewery and tasting room to open.

According to Michael, on opening night “you would have needed a shoehorn to get anyone else in here.”

While I was there, two women rode their bicycles over from their nearby home after watching the transformation take place over a period of months, and sat down to enjoy a few of the house brews. They said they were happy it had finally opened. Because of Bugnutty’s proximity to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Patrick Air Force Base and Kennedy Space Center, you might be able to join in a conversation at the bar about the latest developments in space exploration, perhaps even with a rocket scientist.

With five breweries now in Brevard County, the local tourism bureau, Destination Brevard, is putting together an Oktoberfest Space Coast Brewery Crawl on Saturday, October 12, to show them all off.

Bugnutty’s Brewing Company is at 715 N. Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, FL 32953.

Phone: 321-452-4460.

Hours: Wednesday and Tuesday, 3 to 9 p.m.; Friday,  4 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m.

Growlers are available, as is plenty of free parking.

I’m briefly coming off my blogging hiatus to post the breaking news that the ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store in Lake Mary has installed a 12-tap growler filling system.

I found out via Twitter from Steve Crowley, the store’s in-house beer consultant.

As far as I know, this is the first growler station outside of a taproom  in Florida since Tipple’s Brews in Gainesville in 2010 started doing it, but had to shut down after “verbal warnings” from the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco that it was violating Florida’s beverage laws.

Will try to have more details on this soon.

The store is at 980 Rinehart Road in Lake Mary, just off Interstate 4 north of Orlando.

Beer in Florida updates

The PoseAs I’m writing this Monday, I’m sitting at Boston’s Logan Airport, waiting to head back to Florida after the weekend’s 2013 Beer Bloggers Conference. I won’t bore you with the details of what I learned that will make me a better writer and blogger, but I’d be glad to have that conversation with you in person over a pint if you’re interested.

Nor will I evoke jealousy by chronicling all the fantastic beer that I sampled and tasted and the wonderful friends, old and new, that I shared those beers with, as well as some of craft beer’s most famous and interesting people.  Well, I’ll make one exception further down.

What I want to share is a little about the presentation I made on Sunday morning in a session where a few bloggers gave five-minute presentations on subjects of their choosing. Mine was titled “Florida Craft Beer: Growing Under the Radar.”

The gist of the presentation was using the Florida craft beer scene to illustrate how to spread the word to the country and the world about your local craft beer community when it is not well-known to others. But how unknown are Florida craft breweries to those outside the state? Keep in mind that the audience, though a bit bleary-eyed, were smart folks, many of whom were fairly savvy about craft beer and breweries.

Of course, I heard “Cigar City.” Someone mentioned Florida Beer Co. (they were a sponsor of the conference and were pouring samples the night before). I think I heard “Saint Somewhere.” A few mumbled responses.

I then flashed on the screen a series of PowerPoint slides with the logos and names of all 67 breweries currently in the Sunshine State, and then got into the wonky part of the slide for my fellow bloggers. But the response to the slides was one of amazement and bewilderment, which could be summarized as “How can Florida have so many breweries that we never heard of? All we knew about was Cigar City?”

My point of relating this is that all of the state’s craft beer fans should be ambassadors of Florida beer when traveling or talking to visitors to the state. The more people who know about your favorite local brewpub or brewery, the more who will go there to spend money and help spread the word. This means more cash flow for the brewery, which means more money to grow, which means more jobs, which is good for all of us. (and heck. You might get one of those jobs!)

And don’t forget to not only share the love, but share the beer! Bring some along on your travels to share and/or trade. I carried some beers from Cigar City, Tampa Bay Brewing Company, Pensacola Brewery and Three Palms Brewery – and they did not last long! Of course, I’m bringing back some yummy New England craft beer.

Still thirsty after all these years.

New Belgium LogoToday and tomorrow, New Belgium finally, officially launches in Florida. I received  a list of locations, but it is looooooooong and not formatted that well for republication. However, bars/restaurants who are participating have been advertising for weeks, so you should already now if your favorite watering hole will have it.

Taking a break

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting too much here lately. The main reason is that I’m finishing a “Florida Breweries” guidebook for the Stackpole Books “Brewery Series.” It’s crunch time, so I’m putting this blog on hiatus for a little while to work on that project. I will continue posting on the site’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Rest assured that I already had plans for improving the Beer in Florida site,  and now that I’ve attended the Beer Bloggers Conference, I’m full of it. Ideas that is.

Drinking in history

Finally, my one one brag in this post from the Beer Bloggers Conference. Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch delivered the conference’s  opening keynote address at the Samuel Adams Boston brewery. Afterwards, we were treated to a great dinner and a tasting of the 10th anniversary Utopias in the barrel-aging room. We went in groups on that one, and I was in the last group, which included Heavy Seas founder Hugh Sisson, who along with Koch was among the pioneers in craft beer east of the Mississippi. To listen to the two talk about the “old days” and mutual friends in the industry was an experience I’ll treasure forever. Oh, and the Utopias, which I had never tasted before, was as fantastic as I had heard.
