Three breweries sign with Brew Hub in Lakeland

brew hub logoA story in this morning’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch revealed that three breweries have signed deals with Brew Hub LLC, the brewing outfit being built in Lakeland.

The breweries are Cigar City Brewing, the newly rebranded Orange Blossom Brewing Company, and BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse.

A group including former Anheuser-Busch InBev executive Tim Schoen started Missouri-based Brew Hub in 2011 as a  way to help small brewers expand their capacity while offering help with distributing and marketing.

Cigar City owner and founder Joey Redner told the Post-Dispatch: “For the first time, with Brew Hub, we’ll have the capacity we need and we can open up new states. It gives us access to more capacity, something we’ve struggled with from the get-go. I’m debt-averse, and I don’t want to borrow $10 million to $15 million to build a new brewery.”

OBBC founder Tom Moench recently announced plans to open a brewery and tasting room in Orlando, among other initiatives.  BJ’s Brewhouse is a California-based chain of casual-dining restaurants that, despite its name, does not brew anything other than root beer at its dozen or so Florida restaurants. Its house brews are made in six out-of-state breweries of which three are owned by BJ’s. The others brew the  beer under contract, and currently the closest one of those to Florida is Saint Arnold Brewing Company in Houston.

Orange Blossom Pilsner brewer to open Orlando brewery (Updated: It is not opening)

OBP logoUPDATE: As reported by OrlandoWeekly.com, the planned Orange Blossom Pilsner Brew Pub will not open. “We were talking with the folks about working with them on the project but that never panned out,” OBP owner and brewer Tom Moench said in the story. The good news is that there will still likely be a brewery at the location by the name of 1010 Brewery. Maybe. Read the whole story here.

UPDATE DEUX: Our friends at OrlandoBeerGuide report that the name is actually Ten10, and progress is happening.

Orlando has been thirsting for its craft beer scene to catch up with some of the other hot spots in the state, and now a beer company that has been based there for more than a decade plans to bring it home.

Tom Moench, the brewer and mind behind Orange Blossom Pilsner and two other brands recently announced a name change to “Orange Blossom Brewing Company” on the company’s Facebook page. I reached out to him to see what he had in the works and have good news to report.

Moench said he and business partner Mike Wallace, a former Florida rep for Terrapin Beer Co. out of Athens, Ga., are buying the old 3.5-barrel brewing system that Cycle Brewing used at its Peg’s Cantina operation in Gulfport, and will open a brewery and tasting room in Orlando. The announcement of the physical address and more details will come in about two weeks, he said.

In the meantime, he’s been using a brewery in Spring Hill at the former Duke’s American Grill and Sports Brewery, which had opened in 2002 as Saint Sebastiaan Belgian Microbrewery.

“It is a really cool Belgian system that with tweaking, can make world class beer,” Moench told me in a Facebook conversation. “It has a separate mash/lauter, making step mashing a breeze. Our first beer out of there is Heirloom Pale Ale, a beer made with no hybrid ingredients (Maris Otter and Goldings hops) 4.4% ABV and 35 BUs. For all the problems we had that day it came out surprisingly well and lets me know how great of a beer we can make there when we get the system dialed in.”

Moench said he plans to brew Saison and Bavarian Weiss styles, as well. Improvements have been made to the system, he said, including a water purification system that will allow him to duplicate the water chemistry of various beer-making regions around the world.

“Most beers will use Pilsen water but I will make Bamburg water for my Weisse and Flanders water for our Saisons,” he said. “We’re thinking of doing a Saison of the month with different twists monthly.”

Sunday blue law may soon be history in Delray Beach

The PoseAnother Florida city is taking steps to eliminate restrictions on Sunday morning beer sales that prevent residents from purchasing their adult libations of choice at a retail establishment before the  clock strikes noon.

According to a story on SunSentinel.com, Delray Beach commissioners “seemed almost shocked the city still had such a rule in place” after a resident complained about it at a public meeting.

The existence of these nonsensical prohibitions still in some Florida communities puzzles me, mainly because of situations such as the one in Delray Beach, where residents can merely drive outside city limits to buy alcohol on Sunday mornings. Unincorporated Palm Beach County has allowed Sunday sales beginning at 7 a.m. since 2005. Granted, it may not be a huge financial impact, but it does have a negative effect on the local economy and business community when residents have to leave town to buy a six-pack or a bottle of wine.

At least the commissioners in Delray Beach all seem open to changing the anachronistic restriction, allowing fans of local sports team to stock up on their way to tailgate parties for early Sunday games.

Does your municipality in Florida still limit Sunday alcohol sales?
