Updates from Cigar City Brewpub on releases and events

cigar city brewpub smallI was fortunate to have a lunch meeting the other day at Cigar City Brewpub in Tampa. Head brewer Tim Ogden and I chatted a bit when I first arrived, and he offered a few tidbits about upcoming events and beer releases.

First, the brewpub will be closed on Christmas Day, but they plan a special New Year’s Eve three-course dinner, which of course includes a champagne toast at midnight. At the dinner, there will be a special release in cans: Gin and Juice, an ale brewed in collaboration with Gravity Brewlab and aged in Ransom Old Tom Gin barrels, a product of an Oregon craft distillery.

And provided the labels come in on time, Ogden said, the brewpub might also have cans of Leon’s Grandson’s It’s My Birthday Barley Wine.

Coming up at the Fruit in the Room event on January 28, there should be cans of another special release: Cherry Creek, a black cherry Belgian wheat wine, along with a variety of other fruit beers from the brewpub, the main brewery, and other special beers from guest breweries, including 7th Sun, Angry Chair, Funky Buddha, and J Wakefield.

New Florida breweries: 3 Daughters Brewing and Point Ybel Brewing Company

IMG_3117St. Petersburg, sometimes jokingly referred to as “God’s Waiting Room” for its large population of elderly retirees, might want to adopt the moniker “God’s Tasting Room” as another player in the ‘Burg’s burgeoning craft brewery scene opens its doors to the public Saturday. 3 Daughters Brewing, a.k.a. 3DB, joins recent additions Green Bench Brewing, Cycle Brewing and Brewers’ Tasting Room in St. Petersburg.

Located at 222 22nd St. in the developing Warehouse Arts District, 3DB will offer seven of its brews at first, with some barrel-aged specialties planned down the line.

Owner Mike Harting, also co-owner of the city’s BellaBrava New World Trattoria restaurant, is aiming high by opening with a 30-barrel Premier Stainless brewing system inside an 18,000-square-foot warehouse, along with a 2,000-square-foot attached tasting room.

3DB gave a sneak peek Thursday night to a few hundred friends, local business owners, beer distributors, craft brewers, media folks and politicians, with Mayor-elect Rick Kriseman and Harting toasting with the first official pour from the brewery.

“This is what St. Pete’s all about,” Kriseman told the group. “It’s about craft beer … we’re getting a reputation.”

The brewery’s name honors the three school-age daughters of Harting and his wife, Leigh. Head brewer Ty Weaver, a homebrewer and colleague of Harting at BellaBrava, started using his beer in the recipe for the restaurant’s beer-battered fish.

“It grew from him making beer to, ‘We should build a brewery,” Harting said.

Where the magic happens.

Where the magic happens.

The grand opening Saturday will be from 3 to 9 p.m. and promises to be family-friendly with inflatable bounce houses and an 18-hole putt-putt golf course outside, and live music, games, and other activities inside. Those who are 21 or older can purchase a $20 wristband for unlimited tastings, and food trucks will be there with munchies for sale. On tap will be the flagship beer Beach Blonde Ale and others including the Summer Storm Stout and Brown Pelican Dunkelweizen.

Regular hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 2  to 8 p.m.

And further south …

Poin Ybel posterAs evidence that the craft beer in Florida scene is continuing to gain momentum, a new brewery in Fort Myers also is holding its grand opening Saturday.

The festivities at Point Ybel Brewing Company, 16120 San Carlos Blvd., begin at noon. Its Facebook page says there will be six beers served, and Mexican food will be available for purchase, cash only, though it’s noted that “there are several restaurants within walking distance that accept credit cards and/or deliver to the brewery.”

Credit cards will be accepted in the tasting room, but they advise attendees to bring cash to expedite service since they are expecting a large crowd.

There will be live music by local band sowFLo from 1 to 6 p.m., and a raffle will be held for prizes provided by World of Beer – Fort Myers and Time to Make Wine.

Funky Buddha to release Maple Bacon Coffee Porter bottles

Funky Buddha Brewery logoThe Florida craft beer scene will soon play host to another event that could rival Hunahpu’s Day at Cigar City Brewing in attracting beer geeks from across the country and around the world to the Sunshine State. On January 11, 2014, Funky Buddha Brewery will release the first ever bottles of its heralded Maple Bacon Coffee Porter.

This sweet porter first gained national attention after its release in April 2011 by the original Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery in Boca Raton. The interest in the highly rated brew drew the focus of beer geekdom to the tiny brewery in Boca Raton and its other creative food-related brews such as Blueberry Cobbler Ale and No Crusts, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in delicious liquid form. Such a demand grew for Funky Buddha’s beer that earlier this year, founder and head brewer Ryan Sentz opened a much larger production brewery earlier this year in nearby Oakland Park.

The Maple Bacon Coffee Porter release will be January 11, 2014, at Funky Buddha Brewery, 1201 NE 38th St., Oakland Park, FL. 33334. Sales of the 22-oz. bottles will start at 11 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. or when all bottles are sold. The sales will be limited to two bottles, and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

Local bands and food trucks will be on hand, and the tap room will serve other special releases from Funky Buddha and other Florida breweries. More details will be released as the event nears.

Also, do you know that if you rearrange the letters in “Boca Raton,” where Maple Bacon Coffee Porter was originally brewed, they spell “Baconator”?

Here’s the full news release:

OAKLAND PARK, FL – Get ready, Buddha fans: Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, one of the most highly sought after beers in Florida, will be commercially released in bottles for the first time ever on January 11, 2014. This limited run of 22-ounce bottles will be sold exclusively at Funky Buddha Brewery and be accompanied by a festival atmosphere featuring live music, food trucks, and a host of special release beers on tap.

A true one-of-a-kind beer, Maple Bacon Coffee Porter was initially released as a small batch run at Boca Raton’s Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery in April of 2011. Since then it has become one of the most heralded porters in the world, earning national acclaim from fans and critics alike. BeerAdvocate.com currently lists MBCP as the #2 rated porter in the world with above 50 user reviews, boasting an overall rating of 99 out of 100. Ratebeer.com also lists the beer as the #1 user rated sweet stout in the world with a perfect 100 out of 100.

“Maple Bacon Coffee Porter was the first beer that really earned us attention outside of our taproom,” says Funky Buddha’s Founder and Head Brewer, Ryan Sentz. “I remember thinking how crazy it was that this little brew pub in Boca Raton was being noticed nationally, and our success is definitely owed in part to that.”

Maple Bacon Coffee Porter’s official release will coincide with a day’s worth of activities at the brewery. Live music from local acts will be scheduled throughout the day in the brewery’s public plaza. Five food trucks – including fan favorites The Rolling Stove and Pescados Unidos – will be serving dishes specially paired with Funky Buddha’s beers. A host of special release brews from both Funky Buddha and other Florida breweries will be available on draft, with very limited beers being tapped throughout the day. Bottle sales will begin at 11 am and run until 7 pm, and will be limited to two per customer; first-come, first-served.

Evoking a complete diner-style breakfast in a glass, Maple Bacon Coffee Porter is a complex beer with a multitude of flavors at work. It pours an opaque, ebony brew with a frothy tan head. Aromas of sticky maple syrup and fresh-brewed coffee creep forth from the glass. The mouth feel is luxuriously creamy, with layers of sweet malt and roast giving way to waves of smoke, coffee, and dark salted chocolate. The finish is sticky, rich, and sweet, with flavors of maple syrup lingering pleasantly on the tongue.
