Ticket info released for Hunahphus Day

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenUPDATE: Here is the link for buying tickets.

Cigar City Brewing released the details for public ticket sales to its Hunahpu’s Day bottle release and festival on March 8, 2014.

Tickets will be available online at noon ET via the EventBrite ticket sale service.

Read the details carefully. If you miss out Monday, there are other options.

Here’s what Cigar City had to say:

  • Sales start at noon Eastern time.

  • The link to purchase tickets will be revealed later today (Friday) on hunahpusday.com.

  • Please keep in mind that a lot of people are anxious to purchase tickets, and just about all of them will likely try to purchase at the same time, so there’s a very good chance a large portion of folks attempting will not be able to purchase tickets.

  • For those who try to access the tickets and the page says that it’s “Pending,” that means other people have secured the right to purchase tickets. HOWEVER, we are placing a 5 minute window on completing the purchase, so anyone who doesn’t complete the sale in 5 minutes will have their ticket released back to the public. If you miss out right at noon, check back in 5 minutes!

  • So, it should go without saying that if you’re buying a ticket, you want to have all of your payment information ready to go, otherwise you could be timed out!

  • If you see anything about a “Promo Code” on the EventBrite page, just ignore it, it’s not needed.

  • After your purchase, you will receive a confirmation email that includes your ticket to the event. Tickets are required for entry into Hunahpu’s Day. If your email address is entered incorrectly, you will not receive your ticket. Please take care in entering your information.

  • EventBrite has assured us that they can handle the volume of people we expect.

  • LOCALS: We will be selling Hunahpu’s Day tickets in the tasting room in the coming weeks. More details to be announced very soon.

  • If you want to avoid the rush altogether, buy a ticket to Fruit in the Room taking place at the Cigar City Brewpub on Tuesday, January 28th at 7pm. All who attend will have guaranteed access to a Hunahpu’s Day ticket!

South Florida Beer Week highlights local craft beer

South Florida Beer Week logo 2014South Florida Beer Week officially kicks off Saturday, and like other weeks in the state that highlight a region’s craft beer community, it’s getting bigger.

Beer dinners, pub crawls, beer releases, tap takeovers and other brew-centric events fill the calendar.

Here’s some of the highlights:

  • The folks from the Tampa’s Brew Bus Brewing will kick off their new South Florida service Saturday with a tour that will stop at Due South Brewing, Brewzzi Boca and Funky Buddha Brewery. The trip includes a pint and a private tour at each brewery, light appetizers at Brewzzi and samples of Brew Bus beer along the way. Tickets are $60 and available here.
  • The inaugural South Florida Beer Week Disc Golf Classic will be Sunday at Easterlin Park in Oakland Park. Sponsored by Cigar City Brewing and Funky Buddha Brewery, the event includes a doubles competition, prizes, goodies and an after-party at Funky Buddha. The entry fee is $20, and proceeds will go toward the Florida Brewers Guild, a nonprofit organization that advocates for Florida’s craft breweries. Click here to enter.
  • The eighth annual Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival will be Saturday, Jan. 25, at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Though I’ve yet to attend this festival, folks I’ve talked to say it’s one of the best in Florida. Dozens of brewers, many from Florida, will pour samples of more than 100 craft beers from 1 to 5 p.m. Click here for more information.
  • An honorable mention goes to the sixth annual Field of Beers Festival, a food-and-beer pairing event taking place Friday at Roger Dean Stadium. Honorable because it is sold out.

Go to southfloridabeerweek.blogspot.com for a complete calendar of events.

Cigar City Brewing to brew five-beer series for its fifth anniversary

5Y_ALLTampa’s Cigar City Brewing will celebrate its fifth anniversary on March 9, but until now it has never released any sort of special brew for its anniversary. So to make up for it, this year the brewery will release five beers brewed for the occasion.

Each of the five department teams at the brewery is developing and brewing one of the beers. Though it’s not mentioned in the announcement, there’s bound to be an element of competition involved. The five styles will be a Gose, an American-Style Barley Wine, a New Zealand Style Double IPA, an Imperial Oatmeal Cream Porter, and a sour Florida Weisse.

Here’s the news release.

CIGAR CITY BREWING HONORS STAFF IN CELEBRATION OF 5th ANNIVERSARY
January 9, 2014

(Tampa, FL) – Cigar City Brewing is issuing a special batch of beers in honor of its fifth birthday. The brewery, which sold its first beer March 9, 2009 has never celebrated its anniversary with a special beer release but will make up for it by releasing 5 Beers For Five Years, a series of five different beers, each one conceived entirely by each of the five departments in the brewery.

· The Packaging team will be producing a Gose Ale with fruit and spices added to emulate a margarita.

· The Brewing team is currently working on a unique American-style Barley Wine. This will be a unique take on the style by being heavily hopped with non-American hops.

· The Cellar team is contributing a New Zealand-style Double IPA. This big beer will feature copious amounts of hops from New Zealand.

· The Brewery Reps & Admin team are brewing an Imperial Oatmeal Cream Porter with lactose sugar, three types of chocolate malt and a generous amount of oats.

· The Tasting Room team will produce a sour Florida Weisse with tangerines.

“The last five years have been a blur, a whirlwind of constant and rapid growth,” said Wayne Wambles, Cigar City Brewmaster. “Meeting the increased demand has been a point of frustration that we are finally able to accommodate.” Cigar City Brewing founder Joey Redner echoed a similar sentiment regarding five years of growth, “We’re here and we’re going strong. It’s really cool that we’ve been embraced locally as well as internationally. It’s humbling.”

The 5 Beers For Five Years series will be released simultaneously. Each beer will be available in the Cigar City Brewing Tasting Room and Cigar City Brewpub as well as in very limited distribution around the first week of March.

Keep an eye on CCB’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for upcoming news and events.

For the record, the first week of March coincides with Tampa Bay Beer Week, so don’t be surprised to see these beers poured March 8 during Hunahpu’s Day.

Win a Beer in Florida bottle opener

This giveaway has closed, and the winner chosen. Check your email if you commented.

I teased to this on the Beer in Florida Facebook page, and now it’s time for one of you to win a custom Beer in Florida bottle opener.

IMG_3144

The opener, as you see in the photo, is a high-quality 7-inch long flat bottle opener featuring the groovy Beer in Florida logo that was created by Fresh Roasted Graphics. It has what’s called a powder coating, which makes it sturdier than plain steel. I’ve been using mine a lot during the past few months, and it looks as good as it did when it arrived in the mail.

It’s made by the good folks at Custom On It, a manufacturer of custom imprinted promotional items, and they were generous enough to supply another opener so that one of you can win it.

Here’s how to enter:

  • Leave a comment below mentioning the Florida craft beer event you’re most looking forward to in 2014.

Here’s how to get some bonus entries.

  • Go to this story I wrote on CraftBeer.com, Collaboration on the FL-ORegon Trail, and click the Facebook “Like” button on the upper right of the  page, and then leave a separate comment below saying you have done so. If you’ve already done it, that counts – just leave a comment.
  • Pre-order a copy of my upcoming book, Florida Breweries, through this link to Amazon.com, and leave a separate comment below that you have done so. Again, if you’ve already done it, leave a comment and that will be an entry.

I’ll run this through January 29, 2014, at noon, at which time I’ll use the Random.org service to choose a winner. The winner will be notified by email and have 24 hours to respond. If I don’t hear back, another winner will be chosen.

And just for reading this, anyone who wants to order any promotional items through Custom On It will receive a 10 percent discount by entering the code BEERINFLORIDA.

Good luck, Drink Local, and Cheers!
