Brew Hub hires brewmaster for St. Louis operation

brew hub logoBrew Hub, the company that built the “partner brewery” operation in Lakeland, has announced the hiring of the brewmaster for its planned St. Louis-area facility, scheduled to open in early 2016. Jim Ottolini is a veteran brewer, having spent more than 22 years at The St. Louis Brewery, makers of Schlafly beer.

One intriguing mention is that the St. Louis facility will “brew craft beer for several regional craft breweries throughout the Midwest and for some of the company’s award-winning brewing partners, including Cigar City Brewing, Orange Blossom Pilsner, and BJ’s Restaurants (Nasdaq: BJRI), Green Man Brewing and GolfBeer Brewing Company as well as Brew Hub’s home brands.”

Cigar City, OBP and the others are currently partners in the Lakeland brewery. I asked spokesman Paul Byrne if that means those brands will be part of the St. Louis brewery.

“That’s the plan but we have not signed those contracts yet,” Byrne replied.  “Good chance though that some of those partners will want to brew their beers in St. Louis and at other new Brew Hub breweries.”

Here’s the full release:

Brew Hub hires chief of brewing operations and the company’s first CFO

Jim Ottolini and Dave Winking join team of beer industry experts

ST. LOUIS (Jan. 8, 2015): Brew Hub, a company led by a team of beer industry executives and craft-brewing experts, has hired Jim Ottolini as chief of brewing operations. In his new role, Ottolini will be responsible for brewing operations, and he will be head brewmaster at the company’s St. Louis brewery which is scheduled to open in 2016

Ottolini joins Brew Hub after spending more than 22 years at The St. Louis Brewery, makers of Schlafly beer. Ottolini was responsible for the brewing and packaging operations of the St. Louis Brewery’s two facilities in St. Louis. Jim also was responsible for planning and coordinating activities related to the design and expansion of production equipment and resources to meet Schlafly’s growth objectives.

“Jim Ottolini is one of the most revered and respected brewers in the craft beer industry, and we could not be more excited to have him join the Brew Hub team,” said Tim Schoen, CEO of Brew Hub. “Jim has been brewing some of the highest-quality craft beer in the industry for more than 22 years, and he’s been a leader who has helped the industry mature and grow market share. We look forward to Jim leading our brewing operations and our St. Louis brewery.”

As head brewmaster of Brew Hub’s St. Louis brewery, Ottolini will be responsible for the design and construction of the brewery and for brewing operations once the brewery is built. The company plans to brew craft beer for several regional craft breweries throughout the Midwest and for some of the company’s award-winning brewing partners, including Cigar City Brewing, Orange Blossom Pilsner, and BJ’s Restaurants (Nasdaq: BJRI), Green Man Brewing and GolfBeer Brewing Company as well as Brew Hub’s home brands.

Ottolini joins Brew Hub’s team of brewmasters led by Dr. Paul Farnsworth. Farnsworth is the chief brewer at the company’s Lakeland, Florida brewery and is responsible for Brew Hub’s brewing innovation, technology and quality control.

Ottolini received the 2012 Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing and serves as an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a B.A. in French Literature from the University of Kansas and an Executive M.B.A. from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in Saint Louis. Jim also has earned several certificates from the Siebel Institute and Master Brewers Association of the Americas.

Brew Hub plans to break ground on its St. Louis brewery in May 2015. The brewery and tasting room are scheduled to open in early 2016.

Brew Hub also has hired Dave Winking as the company’s first chief financial officer. Winking joins Brew Hub after serving as a financial consultant to craft brewers throughout the Midwest. From 2011 through 2013, Winking served as vice president, business operations for advertising agency Momentum Worldwide. Prior to 2011, Winking spent more than 21 years in a variety of finance, marketing and media positions at Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis.

As CFO of Brew Hub, Winking will be responsible for all finances, budgeting and accounting for the company.

“The addition of Dave Winking to our executive team is a huge milestone for Brew Hub,” said Schoen. “Dave brings extensive financial and accounting expertise combined with more than 25 years of beer industry experience, which will help our company evolve and expand to a much higher level.”

Winking holds a B.S. in Accounting from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Winking also is a certified public accountant.

Brew Hub provides full brewing, packaging, distribution and selling services for craft beer brands that are constrained by capacity, geography or capital. The company opened its first brewery in Lakeland, Florida in August 2014, and recently announced it will build its second brewery in St. Louis. Brew Hub eventually will have at least five breweries located throughout the country that will cater to craft breweries. Specific markets will be determined based on demand, but the company is considering strategic locations in the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic, Texas and the West Coast. This network of Brew Hub facilities will allow craft brewers from across the country to partner brew their beers on site and enter new markets.

Partner brewing is a process that allows craft breweries to brew their beer to exact specifications under the supervision of their own brewmaster, and to package and distribute from Brew Hub. Brew Hub also offers its partners services, including sales, marketing, logistics, legal, and government affairs. Partner brewing allows craft brewers to expand their distribution without the overhead costs of building a new brewery or the complexity of contract brewing at third-party facilities.

The St. Louis brewery will be located in Chesterfield, Missouri and will have an initial brewing capacity of 75,000 barrels (one million cases) and the potential to expand its capacity to 200,000 barrels annually. The site’s central location will allow the company to efficiently distribute beer to wholesalers in key craft beer markets throughout the Midwest.

The brewery will feature a 3,000-square-foot tasting room and biergarten. Brew Hub will employ approximately 55 people at its St. Louis brewery in brewing, operations, front office and tasting room.

Brew Hub was founded and is led by CEO Tim Schoen. Brew Hub’s financial sponsor is a private investment firm, The Yucaipa Companies.

Craft beer festival will help the heroes to heal

Road Warriors logoFour years ago, when this blog started, a Florida-based festival offering a decent number of craft beers to sample stood a good chance of getting coverage. There weren’t a whole lot. That’s changed.

Now it’s a matter of logistics. There are so many that this one-man operation just doesn’t have the time to cover them all. It’s a good thing in many ways, but I feel bad about not doing more to help spread the word. That’s why I encourage organizers to use the site’s interactive events calendar so that some mention is given to the event

But sometimes a festival has a story compelling enough that I want to help tell it. The Hops for Heroes Craft Beer Festival is one of those. It will take place on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. in front of Brewers’ Tasting Room, 11270 Fourth St. N., St. Petersburg.

All proceeds from the festival will go to the nonprofit Road Warrior Foundation, whose stated mission is to provide “wounded, ill, and injured U.S. veterans memorable adventures that serve as one of the critical steps in their rehabilitative journey.”

The adventures for these real-life warriors mostly take place through a partnership with Can-Am, the maker of the motorized Spyder. You may have seen these two-wheels-in-front, one-wheel-in-the-back contraptions on the roads around the Tampa Bay area. The biggest adventure yet was a Seattle-to-Tampa ride for the veterans last June. Another ride, still in the planning stages, is to take place this summer, likely on a route down the East Coast of North America.

You can read more about Project Road Warrior by clicking here  .

Here are the details on the festival:

  • Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door, if any are left. Sales are limited to 400. Designated driver tickets are available for $10. Tickets are available here.
  • Many of the Tampa Bay area’s breweries and homebrew will be pouring beer samples: Rapp Brewing, Croxbone , Darwin Brewing Company, Cigar City Brewing, Pair O’ Dice Brewing, Barley Mow Brewing Company, Green Bench Brewing Co., St Petersburg Brewing Company, Brewers’ Tasting Room, Three Daughters Brewing, Special Hoperations Brew Club, Phoenix Fire and more.
  • Admission includes a tasting glass, unlimited tasting, barbecue, and entertainment.
  • Because the Road Warrior Foundation is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, $30 of each ticket purchased is tax deductible.
  • There will be an auction of bottles of rare beer, and a raffle of items donated by local businesses (I’ll be donating a signed copy of “Florida Breweries.” I’ll also be signing copies there, so if you got one for Christmas, bring it by. If you didn’t, there will be some available for purchase.)

UPDATE: Here are the breweries as of 1/7/2015 (*confirmed):

For Beer in Florida, it has been the worst and best of times

My plans over the holidays included working on this website to update some features, try to sell some ads, and write and schedule some posts about upcoming events. Instead, I spent more than two weeks dealing with tecBeer in Florida logohnical issues, which led to one of the worst things that could happen to a blogger.

I lost my website to someone else.

And it turned out to be a great thing.

First, a little background. I’ve experienced extreme difficulty over the past few months in attempting to transfer the site’s domain name from one hosting service to another. Each time I thought it had been done successfully, it wasn’t. This resulted in the site shutting down a few times over the past several months until it could get back online, usually within a day or two.

It shut down again on Christmas Eve. A flurry of messages, texts and phone conversations among the involved parties followed over the next week. It seemed that it had come down to one final step that would have been done on Monday, Jan. 5. Except that on Sunday, I tried to log onto the site and up popped an entirely new page under the Beer in Florida name.

New look. New content. None of it mine.

My stomach dropped. Four years of content and brand building, potentially down the drain. Because of another issue that I won’t go into here, I immediately assumed that it was a nefarious action. I posted on Facebook – and I’m paraphrasing – that I was going to find this dirty rotten no-good SOB and use all legal means at my disposal to do nasty, dirty things to him, her and/or it. I was pissed.

Then Sunday evening, there was a message on my Facebook account that started: “Hey Gerard, I am the one that bought beerinflorida.com in the godaddy auction for expired domain names. There was no posts in 8 months so I assumed it was a dead site.”

My stress level went from red to yellow. It seemed to be a human being who was given faulty information. I hoped I could work with this fellow, Dan Randall.

(Note: This is not his real name. Sometimes on the intertubes and social medias, information gets jumbled up and comes out looking like a U.S.S. Enterprise transporter malfunction. I don’t want this guy to inadvertently get a reputation as some sort of shady character).

I responded to Mr. Randall, and in the course of correspondence, I discovered that he is not just a human being, but a good one. Perhaps even an exceptional one.

Not only is he tangentially involved in the Florida craft beer scene, but his day job is in website management. He just wanted to try his hand at beer writing, and legitimately thought he was buying a dormant web site domain to get started. He used his expertise to help get my content back onto the site, and put ownership back into my hands.

Beer in Florida, my friends, has returned, and I have a new friend in brew. We are already talking about getting together in the near future for pints. And when he restarts his blog with another domain, you can bet that I’ll help him promote it as much as possible.

What started as a horror show turned into an uplifting fable with two morals.

The first, which is not new: Beer People are Good People.

The second, also not new: Stay away from GoDaddy (dot) com if you’re looking for a website host. They suck.

Coppertail Brewing plans special release bottles on Sunday

The Coppertail Brewing Co.

The Coppertail Brewing Co. “Core Four.”

You may have heard that Coppertail Brewing Co. in Tampa has its bottling line up and running, and it’s “Core Four” beers landed on shelves in the Tampa Bay area today.

What you might not know is that the brewery will release its first limited bomber bottles Sunday at its tasting room.

About 150 of the 750-millileter bottles of Seasonal Relief, an 8.5% ABV Baltic Porter with Goji Berries will be available for $10 each beginning when the Coppertail tasting room opens at noon.

The distributed six-packs of Free Dive IPA, Unholy Trippel, Night Swim Porter, and Wheat Stroke wheat ale currently are available only on the Tampa side of the bay, said brewery founder and president Kent Bailey. You can find them at Total Wine & More, ABC Fine Wine & Spirits locations and Craft Beer Cellar in Brandon.

Some bottles of Seasonal Relief will go into distribution as well, Bailey said, likely arriving on shelves in the next few days.
