Beer Advocate just released its regional lists of top 100 beers, and in the South-Atlantic (US), Florida dominates!
The region encompasses Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virgina and West Virginia. I haven’t done the counting yet, but Beer Geek Alan Shaw writes that he tallied 36 Florida beers on the list – and 34 of them are from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa! The other two are the Maple Bacon Coffee Porter from The Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery in Boca Raton (No. 2), and Big Nose IPA from Swamp Head Brewery in Gainesville (No. 96).
Topping the list is Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout from Cigar City. (And yes, those are my bottles in the picture).
In case you are wondering how the list was ranked, Beer Advocate explains:
Lists are generated using a Bayesian estimate that pulls data from millions of user reviews (not hand-picked) and normalizes scores based on the number of reviews for each beer. The general statistical formula is:
weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = review average for the beer
v = number of reviews for the beer
m = minimum reviews required to be considered (currently 10)
C = the mean across the list (currently 3.76)
Now that we have that cleared up, congratulations to Cigar City, Funky Buddha, Swamp Head and the Florida craft beer scene.
We are here. We are beer.
