Tampa’s Mermaid Tavern Serves Craft Beer with a Nod to Old Florida

The recently opened Mermaid Tavern in Tampa’s Seminole Height’s neighborhood was profiled by Kathy Steele of the Tampa Tribune.

The description of its 20 taps of craft beer and another 10 so in bottles whets my thirst for a visit to what co-owner Becky Flanders described as “a dump” and “a dive bar” before she and business partner Lux DeVoid purchased the property and restored it.

But here’s the part of the story that really spoke to this old Floridian’s heart: The name, decorations and style give a nod to the Weeki Wachee mermaids, old Florida and the state’s insatiable appetite for kitsch.”

The bar features a lot of Florida-brewed beer – including Cigar City, Tampa Bay Brewing Co., Dunedin Brewery, Cold Storage Craft Brewery and Saint Somewhere – as well as an assortment of wines.

Sounds like a place where the mermaids would drink.
