Florida beer gets top props

Beer in Florida photo by Gerard WalenSome Florida beer bars have garnered accolades lately from the national beer press. Three made Draft Magazine’s list of America’s 100 Best Beer Bars: 2011, and a whopping five were named to RateBeer’s 50 Best Beer Bars 2011.

Here they are. Click on the links for more information.

Draft Magazine

RateBeer (list was numbered)

  • Redlight Redlight (#3)
  • Oldsmar Tap House (#26)
  • The Cock & Bull Pub (#27), 975 Cattlemen Road, Sarasota.
  • Proof (#31), 1717 W. Tennessee, Tallahassee.
  • Abbey (#48), 117 N. Woodland Blvd., Deland.

In addition, RateBeer named Cigar City Brewing the fourth best brewer in the WORLD! And several of CCB’s beer made the Best Beers by Style list.

Is this the tipping point, where the rest of the country no longer considers Florida a “craft beer wasteland”? I think it’s time.

On the other hand, the Houston Press recently published a graphic: “Why Your State Drinks: The American State of Brews,”  which pegged Florida with (gag) MGD Light 64. Hey, Texas! Try again.

We are here, we are beer.

A little disappointed that Willard’s Tap House in Largo didn’t make it anywhere on the list… 40 beers on tap, all craft brews and great variety with insanely knowledgeable staff that LOVE the beer. Whatever, will continue to support my favorite beer place, look them up on Facebook and give them a try.

I’ve been to Willard’s, and it certainly could have gone on the list, as could several others. Though it’s disappointing they didn’t make it, in the big picture it’s encouraging that they had so many great craft beer bars in Florida from which to choose.
